Wipping Children in Church
I am new to the board, but just had to speak out on what I had seen.
Did anyone see this on BET last night?
Maybe it is just my personal beliefs, but I was schocked that the parents would do that to the children. Now, my momma would say that a good ole' belt can solve any problem,...(don't want to remember them days) But there comes a time,a place, and most of all...a reason.
19 children were taken away from their parents into protective services because of this. Would you do that to your child/children?

This story is really sad. I do believe in spanking/whipping children, but I would never allow my child/children to be abused like these poor kids were. They have taken "sparing the rod" to a whole new level.
I've also heard that this pastor encouraged the teenagers in his congregation (as young as 14) that were interested in having sex, to get married. And he would take them across the state line to do so, if they were to young to marry in GA.

Okay. I am all for corporal punishment, I do admit-- but I have to draw the line with "harsh corporal punishment" (i.e. child abuse). When I acted up in church (a RARE instance, usually marked by me following a crowd of kids whose parents didn't care how they behaved), I got the subtle, yet excrutiatingly painful pinch&twist to my side. My mother could do it while still smiling and singing along with the choir! And, I knew as well as she that I deserved it.
But, some people take discipline too far. I feel especially sorry for people who justify wrong-doing with Bible passages. The pastor quoted a passage from Proverbs 13:24--"He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly."--but I still can't see how they can conclude that it means beat the H-E-double-hockey-sticks out of innocent children.
I want to say that these folks need Jesus, but the sad thing is they think they already have Him! Religious beliefs can really create some huge divisions in our society!

Now I believe that children do need discipline (i.e. timeouts/whoopings/punishment, etc.)-but you DO NOT whoop your child in the SANCTUARY! Churches do have restrooms-take your child there if he/she is unruly. It's bad enough to have to spank your child, but to embarass him/her by doing so in front of the congregation is uncalled for.
And to think that these "parents" actually let the congregation as a WHOLE come and strike their children until told to stop...IMO that is sick !! I'm not even gonna go there and tell what I really think about this group, because this message would end up being extremely long-but I will say this-when your child has welts and open wounds on their little bodies because you feel that that is the only way to discipline them, you need the following:
1) to open your African American history books to see how the slaves where "disciplined"
2) a psychiatrist
3) prayer
4) TO HAVE YOUR CHILDREN TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU!

I was an angel in church! An ANGEL!
But, if I ever did act up, all I needed was The Look. No hands laid on me. Just The Look.
I could never understand those mamas with switches, just singing and praising, gettin hit by the spirit, and stopping mid-dance to switch the mess outta someone's hands or back.

Let me clarify something with this story. I don't think the spanking happened during a regular church service, even though they did happen in the church building. From what I could gather the pastor would "supervise" the beatings of the kids and have other men from the church around to hold them down if they tried to move, run away, etc.

I personally think that aboove all, for BET to SHOW those children's facing was horrible!!!
Of course, BET is not really BET anymore it was sold to Viacom which is not Black owned. And NOW, they have cancelled TAVIS...what's the world coming to???
Back to the children, switches and cords are too much. I spank my 3 year old on the leg and now on the hand. She's fair skinned so I don't use those "foreign" objects on her. The school WILL call if they see marks on her.
Children should be disciplined NOT abused and sadly, some adults DON'T know the difference. But I'm not going to let "the folks" tell me not the spank my child and end up having that same unspanked child disrespect me when they start to "smell themselves".
Those folks on BET (the adults) did look suspect. Maybe it was the orange jail uniforms.
This world needs PRAYER!

BET probably got the footage from one of the local stations. I personally was appalled that they would show their faces! What happened to protecting the minor? These kids have now been victimized twice. All of the local stations that I saw this on will be getting HOT letters from me!

I'm still in shock over what this pastor and his church members did. I thought the purpose of church was to worship Christ with people of like mind and spirit? First ATM's, Starbucks, and now gang-like beatings in church. What next?

He was on CNN Talk Live today with a few members of his congregation. Trust me, he was just as ignorant as you would think him to be.

I just read this article and I am at a loss for words. I am old school and I was born in the south. My grandmother was one of those that would send me out to get my own switch for the butt whipping. Y'all know the one's I'm talking about, but this mess that is going on GA with this minister at the helm saying this mess is okay, is crazy.
This has gone way to far, and if they (the minister and parents) think this is right, they need some serious help.

I'm glad to read that you use wisdom when it comes to diciplining your child!! Education is the key to productive/positive parenting. I bet those people as well as the church minister are uneducated. It is really sad, because if you do not know any more than what you have been taught, you will not change.
I have a cousin that just got her children taken away from her, as a result of using corporal punishment. People are not playing about turning you in for child abuse!! I feel bad for my cousin, but I believe if she would have used wisdom she would be in this predicument.
Parenting is more than taking a belt to a child to correct his wayward self. The most effective form of training is to lead by example. So, many young people are having children and not equiped to properly care for them (spiritually, socially and financially)!! It is sad, because children do no ask to be here.....I know all we can do is pray for the condition of this world and the state of minds. May God Bless
