Ok, I am not sure whether you are a guy or a girl, but I'm guessing, by your username, that you are a girl. I highly recommend that you join a greek society. It can become one of the better decisions of your life - if you are happy with the society you decide to end up with. Greek life enhances your options and opportunities, while in college. Most (Cool) societies will often have social events to attend that involve drinking and partying, etc. You will hang out with people who share a common background and similiar interests. Overall, it is awsome and you do not want to be a gdi-because that is not really fun. Good luck and I hope that you join the most prestigious and selective society in your college!.

Luckysmiles,
Going Greek is not about "being cool" or carrying on cliques from high school. Greek Life is about so many thing: friendship, sisterhood/brotherhood, scholarship, philanthropy, and a home away from home. Joining as a freshman has it's advantages because you get to jump right into college and Greek Life at once. If you'd like to take some time adjusting before you make the decision to go Greek, look into the organizations on your campus and see how competive your Recruitment process is (some schools give first priotity to freshman). While many of us party and have a good time, this is not all the Greek Life offers. If you have any more questions, there are a lot of helpers on this board who can assist you! Good Luck at school!

I totally agree with Leslie.... While its fun to party and socialize with Greeks, that isn't what makes you "cool" on campus and that isn't the main point of Greek life.
Greek life/becoming a brother or sister is about bonding with the people in that organization. Learning from and respecting one another. It gives you that amazing feeling of brother or sisterhood.
Can you do it as a freshman, sure. Can it be overwhelming, totally. But if you are interested, I would say to check it out. It can't hurt and either way you'll take something away from it/learn from it.
I would suggest going to the school's website and see if they have the names of the fraternities and sororities on campus. See if they have their own websites and if they are national, then go to their main/headquarters page. See what you can learn about these groups.
Most importantly, if and when you do rush, make sure you feel comfortable where you are and always be yourself. I hope this helps. Good luck and let us know what happens!

Greek Life is about support.
When you need help with classes, your brothers/sisters are there to support you and help you pass.
When you need someone to vent to, your GLO is there to listen and help you with your problems.
When you need to fill out your resume with leadership, philanthopry and organizations, your GLO has provided you with support.
And yes, when you want to party, your GLO will throw a kickin party and invite many beautiful people of the opposite sex.
