Signs-The Movie

Just got back from seeing the new M. Night Shymalan movie, Signs. I'll give it one thumb up, and one down. IMHO, nothing more than a 2 hour episode of The X-Files, minus Scully and Mulder. (But wait, maybe it was more like The X-Files Movie, "Fight the Future"...) I mean, some parts were suspenseful, but I feel as though they should have left some parts up to the imagination. If I had been watching it in my living room, in no way would I have been scared or creeped out. I'm finding myself analyzing it, and thinking about how I would have changed the storyline, but I'm just a big dork I guess. A mix of Independence Day, War of the Worlds and Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind. I'm sure it's way better than "Master of Disguise" for a weekend movie pick, but I wouldn't get my hopes up for an Oscar. Of course, my friends say I am a very harsh critic....so what did you think of it?

I think that it wasn't movie about aliens, it's a movie about faith and where your beliefs fall. I think it was well written and yes I was afraid when I watched it.

Red face

Okay, thank GOD I went to go see this movie with a guy, cause I was SCARED. This movie, I must say, scared me like no movie ever has. Maybe it was just me, but for real...there were about 3 parts when I am positive my heart stopped.

As for the actual plot...metaphorical, yeah. But I went it not trying to THINK, lol. Glad I did!

I recommend this movie... don't go in trying to analyze, just think of it as a suspensful movie and you shouldn't be disappointed.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

DON'T GIVE ANYTHING AWAY ABOUT THIS MOVIE ON THIS THREAD!!

Noone's said anything yet, but I would hate to find out what's going on in this movie before I get to see it.

I didn't get to see the Sixth Sense until MONTHS after it was out, and I managed to not find out what it was about until I was in the movie, and it was awesome!

Anyway, this is just a humble plea from a movie lover. Save myself and the others like me from dissapointment!

Thumbs down

I was really looking forward to this movie, but I was totally disappointed in it!
Without giving anything away, here are some of my complaints:
  • There was minimal character development, except for the very predictable end.
  • The story didn't really go anywhere <-- I can't explain this well without totally giving away the entire film.
  • What priest can be married with a family?!
  • Why do directors/film editors think they need to flashback to events that happened IN THE FILM, like an hour ago? I have a short attention span, but I can remember that speech you gave about 1/2 way through the movie. I knew I was supposed to remember it because you zoomed in so close to the faces it was creepy and the music stopped. (This is always a pet peeve of mine.. give your audience some credit!)

Just a few problems, I thought.
My boyfriend liked it, though. And most of the other people in the theatre liked it, so maybe I'm just picky.

I don't think he was a Catholic Priest, in the movie he said he "wasn't a reverend anymore." I thought he was maybe a Methodist or Lutheran minister...I don't really now what denominations have their ministers wear dickies and the whole black outfit. Did anyone pay attention in the movie, or do you know what denomination it could be?

They never specified, although I did catch the 'reverend' reference, too. I went to a Lutheran school, and at the one service I attended the minister didn't wear that outfit, he wore white robes. And he was (is) referred to as a pastor, not a reverend. I didn't know that anyone other than Catholic priests wore those outfits.

Thumbs up it was AWESOME

I saw Signs last night...we went to the midnight showing - the place was PACKED! Both of us thought the movie was great, but there were a lot of plot holes...

Anyway, as for the priest question: those in the Eastern Orthodox religion (Greek, Russian, Ukranian, etc.) can be married and then enter the priesthood.

Most of our priests wear the same kind of "suit" as Mel's character wore.

But I don't think he was Eastern Orthodox...

BTW, my husband said I screamed the loudest in the theater during one scene.. lol..

I don't know anything about religions, but I think he was more of a reverend/pastor than a "priest".

In any case, Reverend Lovejoy on THE SIMPSONS is married, so I presume that Mel Gibson could have been, too!

SIGNS!!

Oh I am so relieved to hear that other people were screaming too!

Actually, when I screamed the whole theatre screaming kinda drowned me out but I still felt goofy about it. Screaming is definitely not something I normally do.

I thought this movies was SO great! I'd been looking forward to it all summer and it definitely delivered. I am now offically a *huge* fan of Shymalan. I liked the way he managed the story. I wish I could say more but I don't want to spoil anything for those of you that haven't seen it yet!

And can I just add that Joaquin Phoenix is the hottest thing out there! He is totally my pretend boyfriend right now.

This movie was great!!!

I didn't scream during the movie but I'm pretty sure I clawed my boyfriends arm off! Boy was that a scary movie. Even my bf agreed that this movie was scary and he's tough!! I glad that this wasn't a typical aliens movie either and it actually makes you think. Also I don't think there was much character development because it would give away the end or it would have made the end less dramatic. (If this is close to ruining the movie PM me and I'll delete it )
