Red face southern rush questions???

hi! im from berkeley, california. I am interested in going to a southern state school and I want to be in a sorority. Ive heard that the top sororities in the south only take members who are debutanes from old southern families. Im not a legacy and Im from california. Would I have any chance of getting into a top sorority in the south? Im interested in Kappa Kappa Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta and Chi Omega
Thanks for any helf anyone can offer!

I guess it's dependent on where you plan to go to school (do you have your choices narrowed down?). At the Southern schools I'm most familiar with (UF, FSU, Auburn, UA, and LSU--all schools I do not attend, but have visited and spent almost as much time there as students do), membership in those three aren't limited to old-money debutantes, but it definitely helps to be well-heeled and well-connected. Of course, things can be different from chapter to chapter. I guess the best advice I can give you is to ensure that you have at least one recommendation for each sorority at the college you eventually decide to attend.

I'm from the South, and didn't go to school (and obviously didn't go through Rush) in the South, but sometimes I wish I had, just to have experienced the Southern Rush.

I'm from Texas, and depending on who you talk to, we aren't neccessarily southern, we're Texan . But I do have friends that rushed the major southern schools (Tri-Delt @ U of Arkansas, Pi Phi @ Ole Miss), and legacies are given extra attention, because a lot of emphasis is put on your roots down here. That does not hurt your chances, though, because most chapter has a certain number of legacies that they are going to pick up that they know before hand. Also, just remember that everything is "grander" in the south. Read: almost over the top, but in a good way. A plus- southern people are some of the most friendly people in world!!!
Just be yourself, have fun, and try not to make fun of anyone's accent!!! haha
Good Luck,
Missy
