Soonergal,
The answer to this question varies, depending on the sorority/school. Where are you attending school (I assume UofO)? If an individual sorority at a particular school requires a recommendation to extend a bid, it is usually only one or two.
***My opinion only*** (It is always helpful to have at least one rec per GLO you are rushing).

I hear a lot of questions regarding recommendations, and the first thing I must say is that it obviously varies from school to school and GLO to GLO. However, don't get too worried, because I have heard of both of the following:
The chapter gets out and finds that rec. They hunt down alums until they find someone who knows her, and they get the rec themselves.
OR
The rush adviser herself writes the rec, based on meeting the woman at the rush party, and the decisions of the collegians.
Bottom line, if a chapter really wants you, it is their burden, not yours.

IMHO- I've read just about every post on Recs.
From what I've gathered-
The minimum
Big school with strong Greek system, 2
Smaller schools 1
In the North-varies depending on how competitive it is.
South-2 at least.
If they say some sororities will get you recs
if they really like you, that may be so. Do you REALLY want to risk that? Just to be safe, I would have a formal rec sent in and see if someone else can send a letter for you. PERFECT EXAMPLE-We were under the impression that DZ doesn't require recs.Welllll, there is a difference between requiring a rec and preferring a rec.
When there are 800+ girls going through rush,
you really need an introduction to the chapter. Give yourself the best chance. Yes, it does take a lot of effort, but that effort could make a difference.

I attend a small school out west and we rarely receive recs prior to rush. It has always been our responsibility to get recs from alums for the prospective members.

Worriedsenior is exactly right. Even though some sororities do not REQUIRE a recommendation, having one (or more) recs always helps. Recs allow the sisters to learn a little more about you than they already know from your Rush registration form, and helps your name to stand out from other rushees.
