University of Albany sorority members arrested for hazing

Police arrested several members of a sorority for hazing. As the police said, "hazing isn't just wrong, it's illegal."

Alpha Omicron Pi closed their chapter there in 2015. This is a local group, not affiliated with the NPC group.

This seems to be a running theme at Albany.

What is going on there? Why does this keep occurring at this particular campus? Is it because there are so many unrecognized groups?

I am disgusted that these women would use the name of the fraternity that I love to inflict this kind of horror on anyone.

This is a school, and I think there are several on New York, that NPCs won't touch with a 10 foot poll. The hazing culture is too ingrained. And for the schools we're already at? Hold your breath and beg them not to?

SUNY schools seem to have an issue with systemic hazing and unrecognized organizations. I would imagine it's related to the statewide ban on national organizations that held discriminatory membership clauses from 1953 to I want to say the late 80s? With no national orgs on campus during that time there was essentially no oversight of Greek Life outside of the individual institutions.

I was shocked the University of Albany actually lists the active Unrecognized Groups. They state the year of their removal. But it suggest that they keep track of them, almost permissive. And totally shocked that 3 NPC groups are on it. I hear about that all the time with frats. But not NPC. I just assumed the national sororities made sure that didn't happen.

Can/will AOII send a cease and desist to this rogue chapter misusing their name?

Unrelated, the article states that the girls had a "fowl liquid" poured on them - would that be like chicken broth? No, hazing isn't funny, but neither is crap journalism.

From the AOTT site:

Dear AOII Council Members,

We wanted to make you aware of a news story that is circulating and gaining a good deal of traction in the media. It concerns a group of women at the State University of New York at Albany who are claiming to be members of Alpha Omicron Pi. As a reminder, AOII closed our Delta Psi Chapter (State University of New York at Albany) back in November, 2014. Seven Albany students were recently arrested for hazing and reported to police that they were members of Alpha Omicron Pi. It appears that these women may have been operating as a local organization and using our name to do so. Only one of the seven members is an initiated AOII. Disciplinary measures and appropriate legal action will be pursued.

Please know that we are contacting media and reporters about the inaccuracies being shared and, in some cases, reporters are cooperating by correcting online reports. Feel free to share with your chapter members that these women do not represent a chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi.

Fraternally,

The AOII Executive Board

Gayle Fitzpatrick, Alpha Rho, International President
Susan Bonifield, Nu Beta, Vice President of Finance
Crystal Combs, Nu Beta, Vice President
Amber Countis, Pi, Vice President
Susan Danko, Phi Upsilon, Vice President
Grace Houston, Lambda Tau, Vice President
Jessie Wang-Grimm, Phi Chi, Vice President
Krista Whipple, Omega, Vice President
Allison Allgier, Epsilon Omega, Past International President

Unfortunately this feels like as closing the Barn Door afterwards. I know for at least one Alpha Phi Omega chapter, the National Fraternity paid to take out an advertisement in the school newspaper indicating that the group was no longer part of the National Fraternity.

I think such actions are necessary and well-worth the investment.
