Numbers going through UF Recruitment
I don't know if this is old news, but the final count as of today was just about 1150 girls going through UF Recruitment. How exciting!!! It all starts Sunday (for the PNM) Monday for all of us! Well, if you count alumnae as "us". hehehe
Anyway, best of luck to all going through Recruitment in a few days, and now.

Wow! That's so awesome. U of M- D is lucky if we get 60 girls to go through! Quote the last few years has been 10-12 girls. Hopefully Phi Mu will get some awesome girls!

Isn't UF where the new DZ chapter will be colonizing? Are there any DZ alums on here who will be involved with that? i.e. able to tell us how that turns out once it is done?

Yes DZ is coming here, from what I understand they are going to make a presentation during round 1 and pull out after that. Then the will hold their rush after recruitment is done. It seems strange to me that they wouldnt have there rush with everyone else but that is supposedly what they are doing.

Well, it is sort of weird, but it really isn't when you think about it. The reason DZ isn't participating in recruitment is that they are starting from the ground up--meaning zero existing members...who would do the rushing? 1150 women would be impossible to handle-even if 100 alumnae showed up to help. When I went through rush (granted, at a much different school with an entirely different Greek system), there was a group on campus that colonized a week before school started, and they decided to participate in formal rush--they only had 15 members, and 130 women went through recruitment. In my opinion, that decision killed them before they even got started. Their parties did not compare to the 2 established sororities on campus, and their members were nervous and didn't really know anything about their new sorority, and therefore, couldn't provide much information. They lasted less than 5 years before they folded, and never once got even close to campus total....
Bottom line, You have to make a strong entrance, in order to succeed. It would be suicide for DZ to participate in a high voltage recruitment such as UF's, against established chapters with skits, ceremonies, skilled rushers, philanthropy projects, not to mention houses. DZ's recruitment will consist of informational nights and one-on-one interviews by members of a special expansion team. Although I am not on that team and do not know the specifics, this is the process as I understand it.
SOme people think this means they will get only the "left-overs," but that is not really accurate. True, they will miss out on some amazing women. There is another thread on GC where this issue was discussed at length...but I can't remember what it was called. DZ will be looking for quality upperclass-women who usually don't stand much chance in a rush like UF's. They will also gobble up the wonderful women who fall through the cracks (we all know unbelievable women who have unfortunately been "cross-cut") and some who just decide they want to be part of something new and exciting.
Should be interesting-I can't wait to hear how UF's formal recruitment goes, as well as the colonization efforts. Good luck to everyone who is getting ready!

Well, it would be impossible to do rush the way the other chapters will do it since there are no DZ girls yet! The alum people, nationals people will do interviews and presentation, I know that much. They they have to duck out since there is no chapter yet to do rush, skits, etc. So that's why. I was just wondering if anyone here is in on the interviews and stuff that will go into building that chapter. The interviews would happen after rush is over, so we will find out the results of the DZ recruitment maybe a few weeks after the results of regular recruitment. I am excited for whoever the girls are who get selected! It is going to be awesome!

it's always done this way
This is how (re)colonizations are always done - the sorority is "introduced" during first round, then are gone.
When I rushed @ UF, Sigma Kappa was recolonizing & they did the same thing, as Phi Mu did once they came back some time in the 90s.
But what's interesting is that, while those 2 houses were recolonized, Delta Zeta is colonizing a new chapter (someone correct me if I'm wrong - I'm no historian on UF's PHC). So, this is the first time in about 20 years that a new sorority has come to UF. I think the last one to be added was Pi Beta Phi, who colonized in the early 80s (Rowdy, when you're allowed back on here, feel free to correct me!

Life is all a matter of perspective
There are more women going through Recruitment at UF than there are students at my undergraduate college. I'm dizzy just thinking about it.
Best of luck to everyone going through, both PNM's and actives.

Where I go to school there are 1800 undergraduate students. I can't even imagine having 1200 girls go through recruitment! There are usually about 80 girls who go through formal recruitment at my school. I'm getting dizzy myself.....

Aha! I stand corrected! Thanks!
I was just going by who didn't have a house when I went through Rush @ UF in the 80s..

Well I think we have around 46,000 undergrads and about half of that are female so I guess 1100 is a good number.

numbers
I think there's just about the same number this year as last. I know back in 98 there was just about 1500 from what I was told, so just over 1150 is a good amount. I'm eager to see how all the chapters do once a new sorority is added to the mix. I'll be honest I had some reservations about adding another chapter, but on the other hand, it adds more Panhellenic involvement, supposedly helps out other chapters, and gives smaller pledge classes (which is gonna be odd for the first couple years, after 60+, but will add unity which is obviously good!). So I'm eager to see if UF Panhellenic will flourish as other campus' Panhellenic did when another chapter was added.
Anyway, just a few days left!!! Good luck everyone!

Tara,
I have a question for you. Wouldnt the pledge classes stay the same because more girls would get bids. Because if you do the math and say the 15 that we have now take 60 girls that's only 900 people with bids and 250 without. That's the part that scares me about UF. I would think that they would need to add even more sororities so that there are less bidless girls.

Hey everybody...today the dorms opened so that means all our new freshmen should be around somewhere. I was so psyched...unfortunately I didn't actually spot any. Anyway, we do have a huge number of girls going through recruitment this year and I am honestly excited for Round 1 on Monday!!!
This year we're trying something new...all sorority sisters must wear white buttons that say "Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment 2002" from PHC and the PNMs have similar buttons that say "Go Greek." It's to prevent any mishaps regarding the silence these two weeks. I thought it would be weird to be wearing these things everywhere (even out, even drinking, which is a little strange) but everyone's being good about it and wearing them. Its actually kind of fun...they're like our little battle scars.
