Tongue Piercing

I come from a strict Sicilian family. My dad would have a heart attack if he knew I had 2 tattoos. They're so hard to hide from him. Now I want a piercing sooooo bad! I want my eye brow, but that is noticeable. So I've decided that I may get away with my tongue being pierced. But i'm afraid of my tongue swelling up. I already have a problem swallowing. Plus the web under my tongue comes up far so the piercing would have to be way up front.

So to those who have their tongue pierced...
1- did it hurt?
2- how big did it swell?
3- is it dangerous at all?

If I can't get my tongue pierced cuz of my web, I'm just gona go for my eye brow and tell my parents I'll take it out when school starts and buy a plug for family functions. They'll be pissed (especially my dad) but oh well. I'm 21... time to cut the umbilical cord.

Hey! I got my tongue pierced when I was 17....so it's been a few years.

Well, since you're web comes to the front....I don't think you can get it pierced. But, go to the body art place and get the artist to look at it...he/she will know if you can or not.

1) The actual piercing part doesn't hurt as you would think.
However, the clamping part does hurt a little bit. It's really not that bad. Getting a tattoo is far worse. I have a HUGE one on my lower back, and that hurt wayyyyy worse. Make sure to get ice after to soothe the swelling.

2) The swelling and how much it swells depends on the person. As for me, my tongue swelled up like a balloon and I couldn't talk normally for 2 months. As for my friends, they only swelled up for a couple weeks. The swellin part is the worst of everything!!

3) It is dangerous if you don't take care of your tongue. You have to use Listerine until the sweeling goes down. Also, you want to find a certified person to actually do the piercing. And make sure they disinfect all the tools and use a new bar to pierce with.

Make sure you follow the steps the tattoo guy tells you. Also, the big BUMMER is you can't drink for a little while after you get it.

But, if you want to get away with it...make sure you don't laugh with your mouth open. That's how my family found out!!! Get a plug, a clear one!!!

Also, welcome the wors of stereotyping!! You'll hear eveything about how girls with togue rings are!!

Okay, after college I was backpacking through Europe and got the crazy idea in my head to go get pierced. To answer your questions:

1. Yes it hurt... hurt like heck. They didn't do anything to numb me up at all. Compound that with the fact that I'm terrified of needles and hyperventilate when they have to draw my blood and it was a very bad scene.

2. It swells pretty bad. It was a few hours before I could close my mouth properly and not feel like a drooling idiot. Two days and my tongue didn't feel like it was taking up my whole mouth anymore. One week and I could actually eat a sandwich.

3. As for dangerous, I have a cousin who's had his tongue pierced for years. At this point he has a few chipped teeth to show for it. Personally I have a tiny white bump under my tongue that won't go away but mine was only in for six months.

Long story short, I took the thing out shortly after I got home. The reasons are I have such a weak stomach that having that thing in my mouth actually made me feel squeamish after a while. Also, I had to crash with my parents when I first got home and my mother was beyond freaked out. She kept going off about how it was the tackiest, trashiest, lowest class thing... Don't know you what people will think of you with that thing in your mouth... Blah, blah, blah. In the end I decided it just wasn't me. Plus, being a recent college graduate I was going to have to get a "real" job and didn't really want to walk into a job interview wearing that.

Really? I have a "real" job and when I got hired for it, they had no problem with my piercing. They actually told me it made me unique. And I'm a preschool teacher!!! The parents of my kids have no problem with it either.

I had my tongue pierced back in high school. The actual piercing of your tongue will not hurt at all. You do not have nerves on the inner parts of your tongue, just on the outter. You won't feel a thing. What you will feel will be the clamps they use to hold your tongue in place. Depending on how long they take to pierce you, they shouldn't be on long, so it shouldn't hurt you too much. The pain from the clamps is bearable; it is not bad at all.

My tongue did not swell, surprisingly. I was talking just fine. People called me the following day to see if I actually went through with it and nobody believed me because I sounded normal. It is different for everyone though.

As for your web coming up near the front, they pierce your tongue at an angle. I'd go and talk to an artist to see what's up.

Oh, and like KDatUTC stated, no drinking for a while! I hated that about getting pierced! I was D.D. for a good while after that!

1. Got it done after my 18th birthday and it didnt hurt at all the first day. The entire week though was dreadful! It was swollen for the week and I couldnt eat anything but ice cream and popsicles.
2. When it swells, it isnt that bad, you just talk with a lisp.
3. I played with mine so much that hit had a little rip in it and I had to go back so they could give me sea salt. It fixed the problem right away!
I've had my tongue pierced for over 3 years and I love it! I totally recommend it.

I've heard of serveral instances of people swallowing the jewelry and uncontrolled blood gushing from your tongue. Egad!

My sister is a dentist and she has seen MANY a CHIPPED TOOTH thanks to pierced tongues.

Eeek, it all sounds so painful. More power to you, but I'm too much of a weenie to even consider a tongue piercing! Ouch!

I have 3 chipped teeth thanks to my tongue ring. I got it when I was 18, and every year I say I'm taking it out on my birthday, and one just came around...and I still have it!

Like my tattoos, I got my tongue piercing on an impulse. I don't suggest doing that...that's just how I work.

Still, I'm too afraid to get a belly piercing. Weird, I know.

always have to give my two cents about my tongue.. lol

i have mine done twice...

the first time i got it done, it didnt hurt to actually get it done.. the day of and the day after.. it never swelled and i never drooled on myself

the second time i got it done (farther back on my tongue), it swelled for about a week, caused my entire throat to hurt, and gave me a lisp for about a week and a half..but its gravy now !

Ok... I'm leaving in like a half hour to get it done. I'm so nervous, and if they can't do it at all.... I'm gona be raging pissed! My one sister who is bringing me wants to go early, and my lil sis is putting up a fit cuz she wants to go but she wants to eat at a restaurant.... so if they screw this up for me I'm gona be raging pissed at them!
