I wonder if that has anything to do with the extremely bad impression they made in Rolling Stone...keep us posted.

I also read that issue of Rolling Stone...I didn't understand why the girls in the article acted like that...maybe they were just being themselves and having fun, but for a national magazine you think they would've at least shown some of the good things about being in a sorority. Not to mention that in some of the pictures you can distinctly see some greek letters indicating what group they were from. The whole article really left a bad impression of sorority life so maybe if they participated in that they are finally suffering the consequences.

It was titled "Sister Act" and the reporter pretty much just interviewed them and hung with them at some parties. It kind of a "day in the life" story of a sorority girl, but it was very misleading. The sisters in the article got really drunk and pretty much just made sorority girls look like easy drunken snobs. I'm not trying to down any sorority at OSU, however I think that whoever was involved with this national magazine article should have presented themselves better for the good of their sorority. They told the reporter that drinking was a big part of philanthropy...and as we all know, drinking at philanthropic function is against national policies so I don't know how they get awy with that. I mean sure, many of us drink and is part of greek life, but it is really just a part of college life, not just greeks. For the interview they should've stayed sober instead of having Rolling Stone tell the nation that some of the girls had to be carried home they were so trashed. It really made sororities look bad. If you want to read the article they might have it archived on the Rolling Stone website.

I don't want to implicate any particular group...I think more than one participated, at least that is what I got out of the article. If you look at some of the pictures you can see greek letters in the background on paddles hanging on the wall...you can see for yourself because I don't want to accuse any group. The article is quite interesting

??? - They were talking about a party at the Kappa Sig house so they "got to" be in the article too. The whole thing was posted in Duncan's Greek Pages (www.mcrae.ca/greek) in the general forum. If you want to look for the mag it has Trent Reznor on the cover.
Amanda - I agree, but I would also be willing to bet he talked to a couple dozen siters who DID present a good image. That wasn't what he wanted for the article, so it didn't get included. The girl talking about drinking @ philanthropy was either abysmally stupid, or she was planning to depledge & decided to screw everyone.
The writer wanted a negative article, and that's what he reported. Whether it is representative of the entire Greek system there is highly questionnable. Bashing Greeks is the "in" thing now and he knew to do so would get him published.

I agree. Its always seems to be easy for the media to target negative stories. Especially with the need for shock value/ratings/money/power. I mean look at all the stuff that they cover just in the local news with shootings/deaths. H easy would it be for them to start covering stories about the full and accurate picture concerning Greeks. Both active and even those that are now very prominent members(Greek Alumni) of society. Why do they have to promote fear concerning the Greek Culture? I guess thats my beef.

That is true, I'm sure that he did put the worst info he had in the article, since that is what most journalists do. They all think that negative gets more attention than positive, and in our society that, for the most part, is true. I'm sure that OSU has a strong greek system...it's too bad Rolling Stone could not publish that.

Just so you know.... it is my understanding that all of the inter/national sororities were told not to cooperate with the person writing the Rolling Stone article. At least the chapter of my sorority there was. The person writing the article happened to attend a meeting that the sisters were at for another campus organization and the writer wrote about them from that perspective. The women never explictly cooperated with the writer of the article but were still "featured". (On the flip side, they somehow allowed them into the house to take pictures!!) Anyway, the lesson learned from this is if you're told not to cooperate with the media, you shouldn't. And you have to all be careful about what you're saying in public and the image that leaves of someone who is Greek.
The thing that bothers me most about the article:
1) The newly initated member at the beginning of the article who states something about "alcohol always having to be a part of philanthropy". WHAT???
2) I think the writer assumes toward the end of the article that the women in the fraternity house at a party are sorority women, just because they are in a fraternity house.
If you can get a copy, its a good read on what NOT to do when national media comes around.
