Wow. So listen to this:

Last Friday I was diagnosed with a bleeding disorder. It means I'll have to wear a medic alert bracelet and get injections for the rest of my life.

I was just in the middle of feeling horrible -- upset about the diagnosis, upset about the prospect of perpetually explaining to people at parties why I'm wearing this bracelet -- when one of my sisters stepped up.

"I'm getting one, too." She said. "If Jacquelyn has to wear one, I want to wear one too."

Another piped in, "Me too." And another, and another.

I have never, ever been so proud to be greek in my entire life. How amazing -- that the ties of sisterhood/brotherhood would be so strong that a sister would say anything to make another feel better. :-)

And all of the sudden, being the only one with a medic alert bracelet doesn't sound so rough after all.

Sorry for the health problems, but it's wonderful that you don't have to face it alone.

That really is a great story! I am sorry to hear about your condition, but it's great you are blessed with such caring sisters

It sort of reminds me of last fall right after rush, we (the new pledges) had just moved into the house for welcome week, and one of the Sophomores had somehow fallen and scraped up her forehead pretty badly. She had to wear a bandage across it, so the same sort of thing happened as with your medic bracelet, and within a short period of time her whole PC had bandages just like her on their heads! It was the sweetest thing i'd ever seen and I knew at that point just how caring my new sisters could be!

Reminds me of when one member of the US men's volleyball team had lost all his hair from cancer... the entire team shaved their heads. Solidarity, in all forms, is awesome!

Just FYI: not all Medic-alert bracelets are huge and silver and tacky with a big caduceus on them. When I was in high school, a coworker of mine had to get one. She found one that was small and gold and pretty. Apparently it was in a certain "ID bracelet" shape that lets EMT's know that it's a Medic-alert. So it's possible to get one that doesn't scream "I have medical problems!"

I have been a type I diabetic since I was barely a year old. I have had a medic alert bracelet ever since. I have seen ones that are big and bulky but mine seems to fit just right. They are expensive tho. And I feel you on the injections part... I have to inject insulin up to four times a day and sometimes it requires me to do it public. My sisters are often intrigued and some are grossed out. but they all understand somehow. but i know i can find at least one diet coke at a sisterhood event with my name on it... most of the time

I have and ID bracelet, just do a search and I'm sure you'll find a company that makes something that you ca live with

My suggestion is to get one is silver and one in gold so that you will ALWAYS have one to match an outfit. Also not all are tacky that make so decent necklaces and ankle bracelets.

I have had to wear one forever because I'm allergic to certain meds. Don't stress about it, it's just an accessory

Wow, I almost had something to add to this until I read the choice comment you made...there is a medical condition that makes you say inappropriate things, but it has nothing to do with a bleeding disorder.

hot damn, what bleeding disorder do you have? i have Von Willebrands.. its not *too* bad once you get used to it. i wear a medic alert bracelet too, but its tiny and most people think the little medic alert symbol is a flower.. not too bad. best of luck.
