need ideas!!! Redoing my room!

Hey guys!

I need some suggestions. I've been meaning to paint my room because right now it's just this huge white cave. I'm going to try to go for a more 1950's style, but that's as far as I've gotten...any ideas?

Also, for those of you in and around Ann Arbor, do you know where I can find black and white pictures of downtown A2?

I really appreciate your help, guys!

LIEP,
Holly

If you have the resources, I suggest checking out some old magazines for inspiration. Perhaps your local library has some. If so, Vogue, Mademoiselle, Life, and Look are some great places to start. Notice the colors - pastels and metalics, and lines - clean and angular. Also, keep in mind that the 50s was all about "new" products, convienence, technology, science, and optimism.

Don't forget to add some kitch! Typical "themes" were tropical (Cuba was a popular place to go for vacation - maybe you can score some old-fashioned travel posters...I think Pottery Barn has some reproductions) and western (howdy-doody, Davey Crockett, etc.)

I hope that gives you a place to start. Also, here's a site that might be useful to you: circa1950 Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

PS - Can you tell I was a history major, and I LOVE design??

Holly-- I would suggest trying any of the UM bookstores.... Ulrichs, Michigan Union Bookstore and Michigan Book and Supply. I know they sometimes have pictures, but they also have postcards of downtown A2. If you want the postcard made to a larger pic, just take them to CVS and use the picture maker. You can even change the color to black and white. Shaman Drum might even be useful to. There is also the Middle Earth on South U and I believe a poster/picture place 2 doors from it and one on South State where Red Hawk and all that stuff is. That's if theyre still there. You might also try the UM Museum of Art too.
Checkered and stainless steel stuff also seemed to be a big theme in the '50's.

Hope this helps a lil.
