confusing nicknames

Had to bring this up.....I just saw someone from Phi Sigma Sigma calling themself a Phi Sig, which is perfectly valid, but it confused me for a sec, because I'm used to Phi Sigma Kappa's calling themselves that. I suppose at schools with a lot of GLO's that must happen occasionally- am I right?

Most likely, yes.

I went to a Regional Leadership Workshop one year for AST and another chapter had "Alpha Sigs" on their shirts. I was thinking "What the ??? " because at MY school, Alpha Sigs were Alpha Sigma Alpha (our rush rivals at the time), and we were the Alpha Taus. At their campus, they are the Alpha Sigs (I don't think they had ASA).

Also, at my campus, Phi Sigs were Phi Sigma Kappa.

It gets really confusing for new students. It took me a little while to get the hang of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Sigma Alpha Epsilon as well as Pi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Alpha. A couple of us still get Pi Lambda Phi and Lambda Chi Alpha mixed up sometimes.

When my ex asked me who I was having a social with one night I said, "Chi Phi" and he was like, "Well, duh, who else?" He thought I had I said, "Pi Phi."

And our new members at Pi Phi are called Betas, but the members of Beta Theta Pi are, too. So the new girls are just called new girls or new members most of the time.

Non-Greeks give up completely, in my experience. When my roomates were talking with me about a cute guy or some juicy story and they would mention the person was Greek, I'd ask which house and they'd be all, "Oh, I dunno. Lambda Chi Mu Omega, whatever. I don't know!" My best friend talked about a guy she really liked that she met on a long bus ride and couldn't recall which house he was in so I had to dig out of her every little detail that could identify him. If his house was on row or off row, etc. I was thisclose to busting out a chart of the Greek alphabet and schooling her!

Yes nicknames can get confusing. When I was at the Sigma Kappa convention this summer there was a chapter from Marietta College in Ohio. Their nickname is Kappa. I don't get it.

Ha, yeah, non-Greeks never can figure it out. At UMass, AEPi is the Red House, SAM is the Blue House....we're the Old House, it turns out (justifiably, I suppose.)

I guess I do not really have that problem in Delta Gamma. There are only a couple nicknames that I have ever heard anyone use for my sorority. DeeGee, Delta G or Delta Gams. But I think at most schools Delta Gamma is known as DG. However I did meet a girl(from a differnet sorority) one time who called Delta Gamma "Deltas" but they didn't have DG's on her campus so I think she was just trying to guess what our nickname could have been! I would be interested in knowing if anyone has a differnet nickname for DG's at their school

Yeah those nicknames get confusing...and frustrating! As Sigma Kappa, we can't be the Sigmas because we have Sigma Sigma Sigma on campus who call themselves that. As well, we can't be the Kappas because we have Kappa Kappa Gamma on campus who call themselves that. It's hard to shorten Sigma Kappa to a one word nickname when we can't use either of our names!!

Yeah, on my campus we have Kappa Alpha Psi, whohave always been called Kappas, but now there's a local sorority Kappa Delta Zeta, who were also trying to call themselves Kappas. It came to a point where you would have to ask the girl Kappas, or the boy Kappas? It was actually anounced at one of our meetings that we would call the Kappa Alpha Psi's Kappas, and the Kappa Delta Zeta's KDZ's. I'm an Alpha Xi, and they call us AZD's, but we also have Alpha Gamma Delta's who are caled AGD's. So I could see how it could get very confusing for non-greeks.

We have Sigma Kappa on our campus and everyone pretty much just calls them by there entire name. But we also have Kappa Sigma on our campus. If I had a dollar for everytime a non-greek person said Kappa Sigma and ment Sigma Kappa or vice versa I would be one rich lady... But you have to give the non-greeks some credit, at least they got the two letters right!

At my school, we had Delta Delta Delta, which is Tri-Delt, and Theta Delta Chi, which is T-Delt. If you said it quickly, it could be kind of confusing. We also had Theta Chi, and their mail would always get mixed up with T-Delt because the post office would ignore the "Delta". Of course, T-Delt is no longer on campus, so it's not much of a problem anymore.

On a side note, we're technically supposed to call ourselves Alpha Gams, but I think a lot of chapters still call themselves AGD. We usually remember to use Alpha Gam within the chapter, but everyone else is so used to us being AGD that we generally use that with non-members.

Well, every now and then we would get someone, including Greeks who should have known better, calling us simply "Phi Mu."

We had Phi Kappa Theta and Phi Kappa Psi (Phi Kap and Phi Psi). Even those of us who knew better occasionally accidentally said "Phi Kap" for "Phi Kappa Psi."

Damn straight we are the Sexy Sig Kaps!

At Umass even though we dont have Tri Sig we usually dont call ourselves Sigmas ... (other than in the house). Its usually SigKaps ... or Sigma Kay or just Sigma Kappa

Well my chapter and alot of others call ourselves Gamma Sigs, some call themselves Gamma Sigma's, not big issues there.

<p>BUT I know that at ECU the Gamma Sigma Sigma Sorority chapter is Delta Chi chapter, and we have Delta Chi fraternity and our mail sometimes got mixed up. Then we had a local sorority called Pi Delta and they got chartered as the Gamma Sigma chapter of Kappa Delta! I know that we got THEIR mail before too

Does anyone else have issues like that at their schools?
