Red face Shooting at a Fraternity Party?? This is SCARY!

Associated Press
July 19, 2002

Three wounded at frat party

SEATTLE -- Police were searching Friday for two men in a shooting at
a fraternity near the University of Washington. The men, both in
their early 20s, were at an off-campus Sigma Chi fraternity party
attended by about 200 people Thursday night when the shooting
occurred, Seattle police spokesman Duane Fish said. The men were
kicked out for fighting, but before leaving, one of them threatened
to return with a gun, witnesses said. The two men returned around
1:30 a.m. and fired shots through the house windows, striking three
people inside, police said. All three were taken to University
Medical Center. One man was in stable condition Friday morning with a
gunshot wound to the shoulder, said Pam Sowers, hospital spokeswoman.
Another man shot through the cheek and a woman struck in the right
arm were treated and released.

So I failed to understand...
Were the shots fired by members of Sigma Chi?

I don't think the guys with the guns were Sigma Chi's.

nope, they were *not* EX's, but rather punks that brothers had asked to leave earlier in the night who returned for petty "revenge" for being kicked out.

We Had a similar problem at my school this past semester. Kappa Alpha Psi was having either a private party or some sort of fraternity gathering, and asked a non-member to leave, later in the evening the young man came back and I believe stabbed the Kappa that was monitoring at the door. It's so horrible when things like this happen.

Article to clear everything up

Here's an article (the first that seems to tell the truth) about the Sigma Chi's shooting.

Sigma Chi Shooting

Hope it helps. And finally the daily doesn't turn on the Greek's and make us look bad.

Thumbs down Boo on UW!

If you read the article above, it says the school may revoke the recognition staus of the chapter though for alcohol violations. I think that the chapter has had enough problems this year, the school should let them slide with a warning.

Totally

I agree with pi kapp, but its definately not difficult to do this. 10 bucks and an online form. Thats all you need to do. Go to the liquor store that is actually on the street they live on, then buy the banquet permit, then register it with the university by filling out a online form and turning it in to the office. Not difficult at all. The guest list is way more difficult to do. But I agree, they shouldn't lose those priveledges in the fall. Can you imagine how hard it will be to rush this summer after everyone has heard about this. This university sucks though when it comes to greek relations with the rest of the campus. Typical UW!

Damn!

I guesse some people will never learn. When you go to a party do not go heated. My chapter, Epsilon Theta-San Francisco State U., will be getting our 2nd frat. house at state; and we plan to stay strong on security. Shit like that, SX, get me worried about even having a party at the new crib. When we first had our house it was all good, but got shut down and finaly taken from us in '96 because of party-ing to loud and going balls out. Now, that is all good to go out like champs, but not like dat-a shoot out. Back in the day all you had to do was worry about the noise and neighbors; but now you have to worry about ducking and crawling so you don't get hit by a bulliet. I think maybe having an invite list is best, simply so there are no stupid kids to have to drop kick to get out the house.; also this won't give them, reason to feel they have to stab or shoot brothers at the door as a revenge plot. Damn kids!

No way of avoidance

The only thing they did wrong was not register it, which had no effect on what happened. They had a guest list. They didn't let the guys in (I guess they snuck through a window, but I would guess they walked through the front door like we did once at their house). Granted they are notorious for parties and wierd things that happen, but you open your house up for a party and you'll get screwed.

Funny story about Sigma Chi's (the ones across the street who recently had the shooting). We had a party last november and it was going pretty well. Except we are dry so no alcohol was on the premisis. SO girls would go over to Sigma Chi's and drink and then leave and come back to our house. Those smart girls! Evenually around 12:30 or so, they got pissed off at us (for some reason) and wanted to start a fight or something. We're not a fighting fraternity (sorry if you thought every fraternity does) so we just ignored their group of 15 or so guys across the street from our house in a circle planning. They got bored and dispersed, so we thought. Turns out two of them snuck in and were walking through the house trying to steal something (I knew they were Sigma Chi's because they were in the big group and the one was wearing a sweatchirt with Huge Sigma Chi letters on it). I actually followed them from floor to floor but didn't let them know I was following them. They then saw a potato cannon on the second floor and picked it up. Hucked it out the window and onto one of our cars. Those little punks. Cracked the windshield. I yelled to get the hell out of our house. And they started to book for the stairs and went out the front door. We were pissed off for about a week and planning to get them back. But another house that dislikes them (there are more than a couple) got them back for something they did to them by Somehow breaking a couple of their windows with bottles or something like that. We felt that that was payment enough. You play with fire you get burned.
Moral of the story is: Be more stringent on your guest list and lock your windows.
