If the group you want to bring to campus is an NPC group, you need to meet with the Greek Life advisor and the Panhellenic president and discuss your intentions. If the Panhellenic does not want to open the campus for expansion, it may be several years before you can bring this fraternity to your school.
On the other hand…if the group you want to bring is not NPC, you should still meet with the Greek Life advisor first and discuss your intentions. It may very well be that there is funding available to help you advertise your budding organization. She/he will also be able to help you communicate with the national office of your chosen fraternity and intercede with university administration on your behalf.
I think the first step would be to name your group, using a club-type name. Register yourselves with the university so that you are an 'official' campus organization. You will probably need to write up some by-laws and/or a purpose statement.
Once the registration is done, then you should start recruitment. The best way still is word-of-mouth. Introduce yourselves to people on campus that you feel would make good members. Set up an information table in the student union and run it in conjunction with some kind of service event. For example, around Halloween you could sell decorated mini pumpkins and donate the money to a charity OR sell flowers or something. When people stop by to contribute, hand them information on your organization and let them know about another, private recruitment event you are having later in the week. If they seem interested, get their name and phone number and call them a couple days before the event to personally invite/remind them to attend.
Advertise an hour long informational meeting in the paper, on campus, etc. At this meeting, give additional information about what you are trying to do (add a sorority to the campus), why you want to add a group, what is the purpose of the targeted group, etc. Make this last only about 20 minutes, max. Let the attendees know that you will be having additional get-to-know you events over the next few weeks. Spend the other 40 minutes in a low-key social activity.
You will get a feel after this for who is really interested. Hold another couple of events in the next few weeks, see who bites..make these events social or philanthropic in nature. At the last event of this type, let everyone know that you will be having an invitation-only event and that is the final step before you extend invitations for membership.
You might also want to ask this question on the Local or Up and Coming Nationals board.
May I ask what group you want to bring to campus? I might be able to offer additional suggestions targeted to that group.

The group that we are trying to bring to campus is called Kappa Delta Chi. They are a Latina-based sorority that was founed in 1987 at Texas Tech. The website address is www.kappadeltachi.org
Thanks Barb for the great advice. Sometime I think I'm jumping ahead of myself trying to get things done. We want to try to recrite first because we have to have 10 people (to start a club at school and to be called an official interst group of Kappa Delta Chi) The 10 of us have to write and sign an letter of intent so that's why I'm concerned about recruiting right now.

How do I....
Hello all,
I need some advice. My friends and I have finally decided which sorority we want to bring to campus but don't know how to go about recriting other members.
So how do we do this? We are already planning on putting up fliers, putting a ad in our school newspaper, and talking to differnt people in our classes.
I am afraid that this might not be enough.(I go to a huge school that has a very solid greek system) Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks

Sound advice located above!
Also, have you asked the National organization for tips on recruitment, establishing yourselves on campus, etc.? I know we do give quite a bit of advice to our interest groups (we have 10 right now!).
You may also want to check out the "Up and Coming GLOs" board for support and advice.
p.s. pretty website, that one!

prospectiverushee,
Congratulations on deciding upon Kappa Delta Chi! There's a young KDChi Chapter on my campus, they're a hardworking bunch.
Definitely consult with KDChi's national org, so that you comply with their standards for recruitment. They may have suggestions about what's worked/what's not worked for their other chapters. Also, you might want to talk to some of the recently established KChi Chapters, especially the ones with large with solid greek systems, and see what's worked for them. (My school is "big greek", I would say, and it's definitely been hard for my sorority, one that's independant of any umbrella org, to get established - thus you might want to talk KDChi's at OU.)
I don't know about the function of CNHL or NALFO in helping new organizations get started on campus - if KDChi is affiliated with them, and they're on your campus, perhaps they could help.
Also, work with organizations on campus that promote multicultural and Hispanic-oriented progams, to get the word out as well as perhaps to do joint-service projects with (I know KDChi promotes quite a bit of community service!). Organizations like the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, or Hispanic Student Services are examples of organizations I think of on my campus.
I wish you the best of luck! Let us know how it goes.

Equeen-
What are those 2 organizations you mentioned-NALFO and something else? If they're intercultural umbrella organizations, could you post their addresses? Thanks!

Thanks everybody for all the great advice.
My finds and I started a club on Yahoo and one of the people from OU saw it and emailed my friend. The chapter at OU chapter is willing to give us tips. Nationals have been EXTREMELY helpful in providing us with solid information. I am in close contact with the National Recritment Chair. She was one of the founders of the chapter at UT-Austin.
You guys I want this soooooo much. I've finally found a sorority that fits my goals and values after searching for so long. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I work to make my dream a reality!

Prospectiverushee-
I am so happy for you. It really sounds like things are going well for you. I know how hard it is to start a new chapter because my friend is in a local that just started last year. They are doing better this semester but they still have a long way to go. You sound much more motivated than they do and I'm really hope everything works out. Keep us posted!
