Police hunt suspect in East End assaults
Monday, July 01, 2002

Penn Hills police and other agencies continued the search tonight for an ex-convict sought in connection with a series of home invasions and who authorities plan to scrutinize for possible links to a separate string of unsolved East End rapes.
The search for Marvin Robinson, 49, began in earnest around 2 a.m. this morning when Penn Hills police spotted his vehicle and gave chase.
Robinson crashed the car along Duff Road and managed to escape into a heavily wooded area between that street and Rodi Road.
Officers had been searching for a suspect since Friday afternoon when the community began to be plagued with a series of home invasions and assaults.
It was the third such incident on Saturday night that helped police to zero in on Robinson.
Penn Hills police chief Howard Burton said that Robinson had broken into a residence on Azalea Drive where two women lived. One woman managed to escape and provide police with his description and a license plate number of the car he was driving.
After this morning's chase ended with Robinson crashing the vehicle, which belonged to his wife, a Penn Hills resident, police set up a perimeter in the area in hopes of capturing him. Robinson managed to elude officers and make his way to the Giant Eagle in the Penn Hills Shopping Plaza.
Just before 7 a.m. a clerk in the store spotted a man matching Robinson's description pocketing Newport cigarettes. She alerted a night manager, who chased the man from the store and through the parking lot, then summoned police. Officers determined that the man filmed by the security camera at the grocery store closely matched Robinson.
Police believe he may have committed more than a dozen crimes recently, including the armed robbery of a Shadyside dry cleaners yesterday.
Police also believe Robinson tried to abduct a female jogger earlier Sunday in Highland Park. He is accused of jumping out of a car and grabbing the woman, but she managed to fight him off and get his description and license plate number before he drove away.
Police also believe Robinson forced his way into the home of a Penn Hills woman Friday and sexually assaulted her, and then broke into the home of another woman, who was in her 80s, on Saturday and beat her. In both cases, valuables such as cash and jewelry were stolen.
Allegheny County Assistant Police Supt. James Morton said that Robinson matches the physical description given of the East End rapist and that some of Robinson's actions mirror those of that long-sought assailant, who has committed a half dozen sexual attacks since June 2000.
Authorities say that Robinson has an extensive criminal history, although nothing involving sexual assault and nothing that would have put his DNA on file.
"This individual is very violent," said Morton. "There are some similarities to the East End rapist. We're going to take a strong look at this guy."
However, Pittsburgh police Assistant Chief William P. Mullen said, "It's unfair to list him as the East End rapist until there is DNA [evidence]. I think it's premature to even call him a suspect.
"We've done some background on him. And we've looked at some timelines. We'd be remiss if we didn't follow these gut feelings [and consider it]."
Robinson is described as 6 feet tall and 175 pounds.
