Legacy defined?

Hey all. I'm rushing this fall, and on the rush registration forms it was asked if I'm a legacy. The problem is, I'm not sure exactly how legacy is defined. My uncle (blood, not marriage if it matters,) is a Teke, pleged into a now inactive chapter. He's like a father to me; we're very close. Anyway, would this qualify toward legacy status? Is there such a thing as an indirect or partial legacy?

One other (unrelated) question. I'm technically a Junior at my university, but due to a change in majors I'm a sophomore in my program, i.e. I still have three years to go 'till I graduate including this coming. Will this be prohibitive toward my acceptance in a GLO?

Oh, I'm not quite sure where this is supposed to go, so I'm also putting it in the rush forum.

Thanks,

J

The definition varies from group to group, but, in general:

Legacy: A prospective member whose grandmother, mother, sister was in a sorority, or whose grandfather, father or brother was in a fraternity. Legacy stipulations differ for each sorority and fraternity.

The bond of having a family member in one's sorority/fraternity is special and one that sororities/fraternities want to encourage. However, it is not a guarantee that you will be chosen to be a member of your family member's sorority/fraternity. You will be chosen based on your own merits. If you are a legacy, you are encouraged to look closely at that chapter. However, you should also look closely at the other chapters on campus to make sure the group you choose is the best house for you, not just your family member.

If anything that should be a positive thing - we had several "third semester sophomores" pledge. One of them was my age, and she pledged when we would have been second semester "juniors" but she was still a sophomore. Be sure to let them know when you are going through rush - although I don't think guys are as hung up on the age issue as girls are.
