Ask your friends who you never thought would join in a million years, to join. That's where my little came from.

Obviously I don't mean your friends who are virulently anti-greek, if you have any...but the ones who might be interested but didn't want to rush. This is where summer school comes in. It's a more laid back environment and people open their minds to things they wouldn't previously. I was in summer school with my little one day and she just came out and said to me and another sister that she would love to pledge us, and she did the next fall.

Good luck!!

Personally here in NOva Scotia, all of us have really low numbers for Spring rush and pledge. I mean in our sorority we had only two go through and some of the fraternities had none. Some of our ideas: invite friends to rush events. We had two girls last semester come out to chill with their friends, and they ended up being sisters!
One year we made a video on sororities and Iota Beta Chi. Then we made posters and phamplets and called the local high schools. During lunch we set up a tv and vcr, played the tape for all grade 12 girls who came and handed out phamplets, then had some summer rush events!
During the week before schoool begins, it is Frosh week here. And while all the residence students are being hazed, all the ones who will live off campus are basically just touring the groounds, so we plan to set up a table and talk with anyone who has questions. That way we are a week ahead of everyone else!
Good luck!

Soror DGPhoney, I don't think the low numbers are limited to only locals and up and coming nationals. I know this year ALL of the fraternities and sororities had difficulty recruiting. This is just a guess, but I think September 11th lowered the whole morale on our campus and participation in non-Greek orgs. is low as well. I think we will all bounce back next semester though.

Thanks soror but this thread was orginalyl posted in april of last yr, so it was way before sept 11. But yes I think now everyone has experienced the low numbers due to the Sept 11th tragedy's

So how is fall rush looking for everybody? So far we have 35 potential new members signed up to rush OUR sorority...which is A LOT for our school. We usually have a total of 35 girls signed up for formal recruitment. I hope the number of girls going through formal recruitment will be even higher!!

Good luck to everyone!!

a good portion of our sisters are becoming orientation leaders for new student day. Help the dorm kids move in. We have done the candy thing too... as well as sodas and stuff. I had girls in my pledge class that thought it was cool that we were handing out free soda and they came to events.

As for AOX's question: we haven't started recruitment season yet... but we have gotten emails from a few girls via our website about rush. ANd then we have girls from last semester that know girls from their dorm floor that chose to stay away from greek life for the first year and now want to come join us. So I know of at least 8 or 10 girls coming out. I think this year's recruitment will be fun. Word is out our delphia moms want to take the girls to a belly dancing lesson. Something crazy like that should draw attention too... we went roller skating last semester and it was SOOOOOO MUCH FUN!

i agree

ill have to agree with the inviting of friends, i always tease my sisters that the only reason they got me is because they fed me. what happened was one of they gurls down the hall form me introduced me to one of her sister at the end of first semester. adn we clicked like instantly. so when the next semester resumed she called me up and asked if i wanted to come hang out at her place with a bunch of friends, when i got there it was like all axid gurls and it turned in to a COB. I NEVER in a MILLION years thoguht i would rush but i got a bid the next weekend and i love it! and now that gurl is my big! so i say as long as someone isnt strongly opposed to greeks just invite them to hang out with you and see! ashes

low recruitment

I know tabling can be a pain but what gets my attention is when i see girls out in quads with a table set up with everything from pictures to cups to falgs and banners...anything that will catch someones eye. not to mention plenty of girls out tabling too, but not to many. A lot can seem overwhelming.
As the current rush chair I've also been thinking about new ideas to get our active members more excited about rush too. That way if they are just as into it they will hopefully talk to people in thier classes or someone in line getting books etc.
At least at our school its all about the advertising. Flyers hung up, posters in the main quads, girls wearing letters everyday! something visible that will show people that there is another sorority out there.
Good luck

Technically our recruitment doesn't start until September but my girls are working hard now so it will be less stressful later

Also, we started a Beta chapter last February so we are putting together two recruitment periods back-to-back

We volunteer for campus events as much as possible and always wear our letters or something with our Organization's name. People always ask what they stand for and that leads to a whole discussion on who we are and what we do. We do a lot with the Multicultural Center and it helps! We also wear our letters when we know campus tours or orientations are taking place. Every now and then we'll all decide to wear our shirts on a particular day/date. My school has a small greek system so everytime we wear our letters/affiliation, we have somebody come up to us.
