Weddings

Hey guys-

My Sigma Nu and I are getting married, and I have a question.. my XO sisters will be doing something at the reception, and I was wondering if Sigma Nu's did anything special when a member got married. I ask b/c my Hunny's brother-real blood brother-got married and all his Pike brothers were there at the reception and they were supposed to do something for the guy getting married, but it got really out of hand( ex: screaming cuss words at the reception in front of family). I was just making sure that whatever my Hunny's brothers did, it would be tasteful, you know?

Thanks ya'll!

Thumbs up

First off, CONGRATULATIONS!!! May you both have a happy life together.

As for your actual question: I don't know of any type of 'ritual' that involves a brother getting married. However, a lot of chapters have their own practices. Sigma Nu Chapters as far as public ritualistic displays have no nationally prescribed practices.

You're best off asking one of his brothers.

Whenever someone from our chatper gets lavaleered, pinned, or married, upon the brother's request, we will sing one of our songs(Sigma Nu Girl, which can be found on the "Sing Sigma Nu cd, and as well as in our chapter's song files). It's a tasteful, and rather nice song, though how they sing it may not be as pretty! Congrats, and Good Luck. I'm sure they will do something nice, rather than something tasteless.

Please explain all of these concepts to me.. As you may imagine we at Mu Tau are very new to some concepts and need to have things explained to us... This might be useful to some of our brothers...

Lavalering: A Brother of Sigma Nu gives his signifigant other a set of letters called a lavaleer(spelling). This set of letters is usualy in the form of a pendant, or charm for a braclet this is a way for a brother to say to this girl, that they are in a "serious" relationship.

Pinning: When you are even more serious, (some equate pinning with giving someone a "promise ring" ie a ring saying they would like to eventuly be engaged, in oversimplified terms). When pinned, a girl may wear letters, and your badge(when she is dressed nicely)

Some soroities, like Delta Delta Delta have what they call candlepassing cerimonies.
They light a candle(in DDD), and pass it around the circle of sisters. And if goes around once, the sister has been lavaleered. 2 times, pinned, 3 times engaged, 4 times married, 5 times pregnant. After it goes around the circle the number of times for what had happened to them, the girl who was pinned or whatnot, stops, and tells everyone what happened. When candle passing happens, normaly, many of the sisters have no idea who had what happen to them, so its a suspense surprise thing. At least here at knox.

lavaleering/pinning means more to greek women than to "GDI's" in most cases.

M.
