Sept. 11 Slang-Terror Humor?

I read this article in our local newspaper. Here are some of the words that "teens" are using in Virginia. It is said that these are comic-relief among the teenagers.

Their bedroom/home is "GROUND ZERO"- A total mess
A mean teacher-"He's/she's such a terrorist"
A student is disciplined- "It was total Jihad"
Petty concerns- "That's so Sept. 10"
out-of-style clothes- "Is that a burqa"
"Osama Yo Mamma"-an insult
weird individuals- "Taliban" or "Ask the person if they have anthrax"

Now, there were students interviewed who were of Arab descent. These students did not have ANY complaints. They themselves said they referred to each other as "Osama", just as we use the N-word. The author saw it as a means of "taking back the power of being called such".

I don't know about this. To me, it seems pretty stupid, but then again, someone could easily say the same thing about some of the slang that I use. My only concern is that some of these "slang" terms having a moking undertone. The comments about jihad and a burqa seem to be a little insensitive to the Muslim culture.

Those are good ones!! Osama yo mama?? LMAO!!

I can't really comment on the slang, cuz I don't know what this experience is like for kids. I know it jacked me up, and still does, so I can't even imagine if I was 15 dealing with it. I do agree, though, the jihad and burqa references are insensitive.

Cool

These comments don't really seem that bad. These teens are probably just trying to deal with this situation as best they can, as like the rest of us are too. I hate to admit it but some of it is funny. Although, I personally think making condescending remarks about other cultures is wrong. I don't think these comments went that far.

Sometimes we need a litle comedy, as long as it's not offending a particular group.

Personally, I can relate to the "Ground Zero" in reference to my kids' room.

LOL @ "Osama Yo Mama"!

Kids are very creative....
