pike problems
Here at Murray State University the Pikes are in some serious trouble. At a end of the semester party they started a fight with a few foreign exchange students. They ended up in the hospital. The campus hasn't decided on a punishment. It hurts the greek system as a whole every time something like this happens. The possibility of chapters getting kicked out hurts the rest of us.
Just thought I would report the news.

This is there second big problem. The first occured when one of them punched a pregnant woman or something like that. It was really bad. The sad thing is that they just got a bunch of good guys during the last semester that could turn it all around. I hope they have a chance to.

LXA1048, that is sad to hear! It seems that some of the Fraternitys are known country wide as animal houses. I will not mention one that all of the schools that I have been to but, it seems it is always the same one!
You would think that they can figure out the problem unless that is what they want to be know for.

I think everyone will learn one way or another.
Some fraternities and sororities may have some wide open chapters, but I doubt it is a national trend.

I don't know what it is about PIKE's but those guys are always in trouble..especially here in FL. The ones at UF a couple years ago made a pledge drink a bottle of rum and kicked him down the stairs of the house almost killing him, the ones at UCF are known as a-holes and pick fights alot and the ones at Florida Southern i've seen slap a couple girls at a party(the guy's were pretty wasted). I know there are a ton of good PIKE chapters but here in FL...if the guys you knew in HS were dicks they always go PIKE and become worse. I've heard alot of bad stuff about PIKE's nationally in the past 6 months but i also know that the media picks one fraternity and exaggerates stories from 30 other chapter incidents to make the fraternities a national problem. But i have seen first hand and heard from other fraternities that PIKE's are the dickhead fraternity to join. I personally don't have a problem...pi kappa phi thats another story! :-)

No offense...but it seems like this whole topic is to bash Pike? Maybe not...but it just seems that way.
Anyway, I don't think it's fair to generalize that Pikes have a bad rep all across the nation. Though I only know 3 Pikes--they are all wonderful, first-rate guys. Sweet, handsome, and light-hearted .
Not that I'm saying all the Pikes across the nation are like that...but then again not all guys in general are like that, right? In the same way...I don't think it's fair to say that most all the Pike Chapters are all a-holes. Maybe it's just pure coincidence.

OK -
well, it's ignorant and uninformed to make generalizations about an entire GLO based on the behavior of a certain chapter/chapters, but there's another side to the story . . .
Problems CAN become 'national' based upon the level of control/involvement of the national organization. It depends, org to org, just how problems are dealt with, how they're reported, and what standards are upheld nationally. So, it's conceivable that problems could get out of hand on a more widespread basis due to lack of a broader structure or whatever. Think about it: if one area president (or whatever) allows the 25 or 50 or however many chapters under him to 'slide' on disciplinary issues and rush badly and deal drugs and beat up foreign students etc, well then that becomes institutional. I just doubt that any large national org would really allow that . . .

OK, guys...Allow me to speak a kind word on behalf of my own fraternity. First, however, let me say that I have great respect for both Sigma Chi and Lambda Chi Alpha (Tom Earp, I know you call your chapters "Zetas"; are you really the #1 roll number for your chapter? If so, it's a great honor). Here in Florida, and especially here at Florida State, both LXA and Sigma Chi are among the very best of the leaders.
Nationally, I am proud that the Pikes have the largest average chapter size of any fraternity, and that is an honor we have maintained nationally, I'm told, over much or all of the last twenty years. Granted, size doesn't equal virtue or ensure good behavior, but it is one measure of enduring strength and popularity. I think it is possible that the fraternity with the highest profile might be the one to take the most hits from those inclined to fire shots at fraternities.
Here at Florida State, my chapter was off campus for years because of a very bad incident. But, before that our chapter was the leader. Today, after less than one year back on campus, the Pikes are the largest (131 men), won Greek Week, won intramurals, have the highest cumulative GPA, and have more varsity athletes than all the other fraternities combined. That doesn't mean that we are better than the other fraternities, but it is one measure of strength.
The man from Sigma Chi at the University of North Florida mentioned other Pike chapters in the state. Yes, the chapter at Florida did get suspended for one year but they are back now, and they are reclaiming their role as one of the leaders at UF. I'm sorry the UCF Pikes are having problems, but I'm told that they are traditionally one of the very best there. If that is true then they have a good chance of turning things around. I'd say, from what I've seen and been told, that the Pikes are across the board, if not the best overall fraternity in the state of Florida, we are at least as well respected and as high profile as anyone else. Our chapters at FSU, UF, Florida Southern, UCF, FIT, FIU, FAU, and the University of Miami are all considered leaders in their systems.
To the Sigma Chi from UNF, I'm truely sorry you have a negative impression of Pikes. I respect your opinion but I believe it is misplaced. I'd like to be able to show you another side of the Pikes. To the Lambda Chi from Murray State, I have read many of your other posts on these message boards and I know you are expremely proud of your chapter, with abundant reason. It happens that there are two Pike alumni from Murray State living here in Tallahassee. Both are older men and both have proven to me that for most of it's life that Pike chapter at Murray was the overall leader. If that's not true today, I am sorry to hear it, but with good alumni and a great history things can be turned around for the good.
Our alumni have told me that other fraternities here, including Lambda Chi and Sigma Chi, worked hard to get the Pikes reinstated. When trouble comes to those two fraternities, our alumni will work just as hard to help them recover and regain their strength. That's not a bad course to keep in mind these days.
Thanks for your time.

BRAVO, Seminole Pike! Very well stated!
I too am disheartened to read the posts on this thread. I think it falls into the category of beating up on our own considering Greek Chat is a forum for all greeks, and greek friends to participate in the betterment of greekdom.
We all know that there are some chapters who need some help, and no matter what we do, there will always be one or two who don't live up to the high moral standards our respective organization strives to achieve.
I know that I wouldn't want an entire post dedicated to the less-than-sisterly qualities that some of our sisters have portrayed in the past -- especially since this is an open forum that can (and we know it has) be used against us in other forums, and media outlets. We've all been greek long enough to know that sometimes people, even good people, do stupid things -- we could all write books on what Joe the LXA...or Sam the Sig Ep or Sally the Alpha Chi or Betty the Phi Mu....did at the mixer/formal/party/football game/etc.etc.etc. I was just raised to keep dirty laundry in the laundry room.

I did not start this post to bash the pikes. I have several friends that are pikes. I started this to raise the issue of greek systems are being damaged by ourselves. Everyone knows the chapter I am talking about. It may be the LXA chapter at your school, but this is not about individual GLOs, it is about how we continue to screw ourselves with ever stupid incident that occurs. I am sorry that this turned into what it did. I didn't mean to bash anyone.

I don't want to bash Pikes personally, because I don't know any of them personally. But I will say that any man who punches a pregnant women does not deserve any respect from anyone.

Seminole Pike, Yep I hold the # 1 card. When I was at the Burg, I knew and had a lot of Pike Freinds. They were very instrumental in helping my local that I started, along with other houses, on getting on campus. Our second huse was the old pike house when they build a new one. They are now living down the street from my house in the old SX house as theirs burned and SX built a new one. I hope you did not feel I was bashing Pikes as I am a very strong Greek Org. beleiver. The more Greeks on campus the better.
Each chapter is different and each has its own problems. I know I have been on my Internationals rear to work with our troubled chapters. But if nothing can be done they should be revoked and kicked off campus whether it be mine or anyone elses!!
These chapters give the WHOLE GREEK community a bad rep and the Press will have a frenzy about reporting it. I know I raised hell with a local TV station on the reporting of the SAE Beeing kicked off of a campus in KC. While they may have been in the wrong the TV station really belabored the point. I got up out of bed and E-M them!!!
Know matter what our Greek Letters are, the majoity of people group us all the same!

Ditto. This conversation could have gotten very heated as many statements could be taken personally.
Seminole Pike, you handled that with class!

Hey Guys!!
Earlier you mentioned that the Pikes at Murray were in a little trouble, and that you were worried about the new guys coming in because you thought they were some good guys that could turn it around. well guess what.... I AM ONE OF THOSE NEW GUYS!!!
The problems we are having are there, yes, but I wouldn't worry. The whole pregnant woman thing, which is partly lie, happened years ago, and i seriously doubt will have any affect on our situation now. As for the University, I doubt we will have a great deal of trouble, but i'm gonna keep my fingers crossed anyways.
I don't think its a matter of us turning around our chapter, by any means. As far as I'm concerned we have the strongest brotherhood on campus and only blue skys are in sight.
If you have any questions, within reason, on the situation at hand, email me at shawn.miller@murraystate.edu
