Post Llegally Blonde? Will It Hurt Sororities

Ok, I didnt know whether to put this is chit chat or in greek life. I thought it could fit into both so i just picked here.
I was just wondering who has seen the movie and what did they think? Did it do a blow to sorority life or do you think it wont matter a bit? I didnt think it was that great of a movie (But I still love Reese Witherspoon), it was one of those that you could wait to see at the $1 movie or until it comes on TV. However, what i found to be annoying was the portrayal of sorority life. I know its only a movie and its a spoof. Normally I wouldnt even bother to deal with it, but for some reason I just found this plain annoying and bothersome. It went overboard with the exaggeration a bit. Anyone else feel this way. Im happy the character does fine, but I felt myself defending sorority life to my friend in the end even though she didnt say anything, just to make sure she didnt think thats how we actually were. Anyone else feel this way?
Also, there was nothing but the colors pink and green for the sorority and the name was pretty close to DZ's. Anyone know if this is coincidence or is there DZ affiliation? There was something else in the movie that I thought was a DZ thing but I cant remember.
This is just my opinion. Any others?

I don't think the movie will affect sorority life.

Many people already think that we're shallow...that we're clueless. Whether or not the movie lived up to that stereotype is up to the individual.

I brought my AGD sweater to the theater not knowing that there was going to be a sorority featured in the movie. I did get some strange looks as I exited the movie, but I was damn proud to be wearing my letters! I thought that movie was one of the funniest and one of the best I saw this summer.

I don't know too much about this, but..as for the connection to an actual sorority, topics in the Rush and Delta Zeta forums discussed the research put into the movie, which included the KKG and DG chapters at USC.

I don't think that it will affect sorority life...I thought that that aspect of the movie was pretty funny myself.

What did bother the heck out of me was the final courtroom scene. During Reese's cross...any prosecutor worth her salt would have been falling all over herself objecting! My husband practically had to stop me from yelling in the theater, "Objection! Argumentative! Objection! Leading the witness! Objection! Defense is testifying, not questioning!"

As you can tell, law school has completely ruined movies and TV for me.

This got me thinking, do you guys think that wearing your letters to a movie spoofing Greeks is positive or negative? Personally, I think that it is good because it makes us look like we have a sense of humor and can laugh at stuff like that. Also, many people don't know people that are Greek or ever even see people in letters, so this is kind new to them (like, "wow, they're normal, they don't just beat each other with paddles and circle each other's fat!")

Cool

Here's my deal. I have to give more credit to the movie than I orginally did. I still think its one of those I could have seen it at the $1 movies, but it was cute. My fave parts where her in court and at the beauty salon when they did the "bend and SNAP!" routine. What probably made me critical was the fact that last semester I took a film class and we looked at every single issue a film could have. By the end of the class we all agreed the Prof. had ruined movies for us, b/c all we're going to do now is analyze them, instead of enjoying them And since I went in knowing that it was about a sorority girl, I was already thinking about the worst. My bad.
To get to what Leslie said, i completely thought about that also. I wore my lav, but I was also going to throw my lettered baby doll hooded shirt and I hestiated wondering what people would say or thought. Im sure no one would have did anything, but the thought was still there.

I personally loved the movie - I thought it was hilarious. I know what you mean about furthering the stereotypes of sororities but I wasn't offended by a single thing in it and I think they exaggerated everything enough so that you can tell they're just joking.
Oh and I am a DZ but I hadn't heard that there was any affiliation to us - I heard it was based on the DG's (VERY loosely based of course)

In "Legally Blonde", the heroine Elle Woods was
1. Gorgeous
2. Well Dressed
3. Sweet (even to those who didn't deserve it)
4. Able to accomplish what she put her mind to
5. A graduate of a Top 5 law school
6. A member of a sorority

IMHO, if anything, the movie makes us look damn good

I have to agree with the number of people who believe that the movie Legally Blonde is actually a good thing for sororities. The movie provides a different look at fraternity and sorority members and deviates from the traditional "Animal House" portrayal. Elle is outgoing, charming, motivated and intelligent individual. These are all characteristics that any good fraternity and sorority will ferment in four years at an undergraduate level. Ultimately, Elle is successful and that is very important because many people (GDI's) believe that all greek people are drunks and losers. Wrong!! A large percentage of greek members also happen to be the one's calling the shots. For example, PRES. BUSH and REAGAN!

GREAT point Killarney Rose!! I totally agree it makes us look pretty awesome!!!It also showed some positive aspects of being in a sorority- The Delta Nu sisters all took care of Elle and stuck by her in the end. That is what true sisterhood is all about!! I loved the movie(Reese is my favorite actress! And Man in the Moon is her absolute best movie.)and thought it showed greek life in a good light.

I also agree that the movie's portrayal of sororities was ultimately positive because of what Elle was able to accomplish in the end. I really liked the fact that Ali Larter's character was also a Delta Nu and that she knew she could trust Elle because she was her sister. Again, they did film the movie at the DG house at USC.

I finally saw the movie today. I went into this movie looking to make fun of myself and have a few laughs, expecting the typical sorority portrayal. I was pleasantly suprised. My favorite pro greek statements in this movie:

1. The fact that they showed a sorority girl studying!(Vs. the usual naked pillow fights or sloppy drunk hook ups that are usually depicted in movies...ugh!)
2. The fact that she was intelligent and confident, not ignorant.
3. The portrayal of the strength of sisterhood. That we always believe in eachother.
4. When Elle staged the jealous "girl from last night" scene to help out the socially challenged guy with the 2 ruthless girls mocking him. She had compassion and stood up against the girls that portrayed the stereotype that sorority girls have earned unfairly.
5. When she was in the library, mocked by her peers for her sorority affiliation...and the lesbian speculated on how she would be treated during rush, called a "dy*e" and she said "I don't use that word, you probably heard it from (Selma Blair's charachter)." Great line. Shows that it is all the greek bashers that tend to be the ignorant ones.

I think this movie put a few people on our side, so to speak. It was a light hearted movie that didn't offend anyone. The funny thing was, I was in the bathroom after the movie. Some little girl was in line in front of me and she said to her older sister, "Look..she has the same bracelet as the girl in the movie." I looked down and realized I was wearing the return to Tiffany bracelet and smiled at her. She waved back and smiled. It was so cute. Ok..that was random. Sorry.

I have to admit that at first I was very skeptical about sorority image it showed. In the beginning of the movie I was appalled at how they showed sorority life. It was too stereotypical for my taste, but as the movie went along I fell in love with it! I think it really showed how being biased against a greek member is not always the best choice of action. I loved seeing Elle's rivals see what her "true side" is. It shows sisterhood and friendship at it's finest. (And I have to agree that the Bend and Snap bit was the funniest thing I've seen in awhile!). Kudos to Llegally Blonde! LOL! Maybe more movies like this will be made showing sororities in a positive light.

I loved the movie! I couldn't stop laughing throughout the whole movie!

My favorite parts we're the "Bend and then SNAP"! "Don't estomp your last season Prada shoes at me!" I liked when the lesbian was saying something about a Rush Party and how Delta Nu would've been talking behind her back after she would've left the party...but Elle was like - I would've at least been nice to you and talked to you. I think the movie was really cute and to rushees - they would've probably would be excited about sororities bc it appealed to them in a way...it's just a light-hearted movie anyways. I think when it comes out we'll rent it and make a sisterhood movie night out of it.

"For example, PRES. BUSH and REAGAN!"

I wouldn't be totally proud of these two individuals.
