Question Greek Awards

Hello fellow greeks!

I am wondering if all of you have Greek Awards at your schools. We have greek awards every winter and have awards for scholarship, philanthropy, sports and individual member awards as well as a Chancellor's cup (which is the overall best chapter award). Currently their has been quite a bit of controversy regarding our award process. I am wondering how your greek systems decide who gets which awards. Ours are self-reported and decided on by the order of omega exec and selected staff members. This doesn't seem to be working for our greek system and we will hopefully be going through some changes. I would appreciate any advice or insight into how your greek awards work! THanks!

Sarah

we had to fill out applications and submit them to the greek advisor. I know the director of student activities votes on them and i think the greek advisor and maybe one other impartial person from outside of the school

Greek awards to me are a big waste of time. Our chapter submitted all our paperwork on time and it never even got into consideration. Apparently some of the board remembers reading it even but it just never got put in. I dunno, sometimes it seems like the chapters that have members on the board win everything. Hopefully we see a change in the selection process or something.

Our awards are divided between Panhel and IFC and then presented later at the Greek Banquet. Panhel actually decided awards last night. Each sorority sends a member from their chapter to be on the committee and then that committee reviews the nominations and chooses the winners. This is good because every chapter has an individual voice in the decision. The only think I don't like about this is that a lot of times paperwork gets "lost," or generally misplaced, in the Greek Office so none of my chapter's nominations made their way to the committee last night.

Greek Awards at the Beach....

Like most campuses, we have President's Cup which goes to the most outstanding fraternity and sorority on campus. In addition to that there are the following awards: Inter-Sorority/Fraternity Spirit, Best Scholarship Program, Alumnae/National Involvement Award, Community Service Award and New Member Education Award.

But, unlike most campuses, our Greek awards are decided by a group of administrators and faculty members who were Greek, just not affiliated with any house at CSULB. They review the applications and evidence and make their decisions from there.

It's a really great system that promotes faculty and administration involvement in the greek system, and is completely unbiased.

Georgia State also has Greek Awards at the end of every year. My sorority isn't eligible to participate, but I have helped out at some of them.

The greeks here have a program they have to follow called "Five Star". In that program there are certain guidelines that every greek organization has to meet like grades, service and collaborating programs with another org outside of their council. There are a few other things but I can't remember them all. If organizations don't have at least a 4-star rating, they aren't eligible for certain awards.

At the end of each year awards are presented by how well chapters did during the year-the Greek advisor keeps track of everything. The top organization receives the Dean's Cup and there are a few other awards. Each council (NPC, IFC, NPHC and MCGC) has separate awards they give out as well.

My campus has similar awards to yours, however for the Standards in Excellence award, each sorority or fraternity is responsible for putting together a binder of things their chapter did through out the year. My chapter is full of perfectionists, so we start early in the year and collect pictures, flyers of our events, etc. I don't know all the rules, but I do believe that the Greek Advisor and two more people grade it and there are certain things they look for, like was all your paperwork for your events completed...etc.
For some of the other awards our Order of Omega determines those, or has a committee that keeps track.

At Akron, if our chapter wants to be considered for any awards that are given out at the Greek Recognition Ceremony in April we have to complete an awards packet which always tends to be over 60 pages depending on how many awards you apply for. the sororities have 2 big awards to contend for....Praestania (the all around big time -- like the Deans Cup) and Desiderata (more towards community service). Then it goes down to normal awards for chapter programming, new member scholarship, new member development, chapter scholarship, community service, alumni relations, recruitment excellence, continuous recruitment excellence, public relations....and like 10 or so more. Then each chapter needs to nominate members of their chapter for individual awards like Outstanding Greek Woman (an active member at senior status in school), Outstanding Advisor, and Outstanding Junior Member...which is for an active at junior status and my girls nominated me!!!! wish me luck everyone i'm hoping to get it!
the fraternities have the same but their big one is the Dean's Cup which there is big competition for.
I can't wait till awards...its a fun night and i've got so much to look forward to since i am up for an award and also presenting the award for Public Relations since i am V.P. Public Relations for Panhellenic Council.

At Fresno State, it depends on the award. Scholarship/Academics are taken care of by the Greek Advisor (Only the Chapter with the highest G.P.A. can win the Highest G.P.A. Award). Philanthropy awards are give to the chapter with the most $ donated or time donated. Each chapter must sumbit a form after every Philanthropy activity. Then it is calculated at the end of each semester for our awards program.

IFC/Panhellenic also do fun awards. Each council chooses 3-4 awards for the other council to vote on. Then each chapter gives their nomination and the council is the final decision in case of a tie. Last year the Panhellenic Council voted Delta Upsilon Best Sernades Songs, Alpha Gamma Rho the Cleanest House, and Delta Sigma Phi the Dirtiest House. It is fun to do crazy awards like that too. Hope this helps!
