ok, well those are just two of the hosts, but I thought this was a great example of inter-organization cooperation.
I went to a talk on campus this evening, "Israel, Islam, and Diversity" by Irshad Manji (her website is
http://muslim-refusenik.com). She is a very controversial author/broadcaster, and host of the former tv program QueerTelevision.
I just heard about this event this afternoon from friends, and had seen her on tv a couple months ago so I decided to go.
This speak by her was co-hosted by five student groups:
UWOut (the GBLT [and straight] club)
Hillel
Israel Action Committee
AEPi
The Women's Issues Network
I think they all did a good job showing how diversity is important and as Irshad says, must be defended, although we are all aware of difficulties that can occur.
It was also great to see the audience so diverse - my friends and I joke that this campus is so blonde, but there was definitely a good mix of people at the talk, including several who disagree with what was said and did voice their opinions.
Afterwards I bought her book and she signed it to me with a particular message so that was nice too!
I just love seeing Greeks doing good stuff on campus and community as in bringing in guest speakers (and all that good charity work we do).
