Question Embarassing Brother/Sister?

MenaceKiller's thread about the unruly brother brought another question to mind... Is/was there anyone in your chapter you just couldn't stand? I don't just mean that he/she wasn't one of your close friends, I mean someone who, when you realize he/she is walking around in campus wearing the same letters as you, it makes you cringe!

My roommate sophmore year was...well, suffice it to say that she didn't act like a lady. After I graduated she finally got her pin pulled for something or other so I'm relieved to say she's no longer my sister.

Anyone like that ever sneak into YOUR GLO?

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but I don't feel that it would be appropriate to discuss inappropriate behavior of sisters/brothers. Every chapter, I assume, has members who don't "measure up", but Greekchat isn't the place to discuss such behavoir. After all, we are trying to promote positive Greek life.

I personally think it speeks well of her GLO that her former sister had her pin pulled. The fact is you're going to end up with people that function well as new members and then turn into something completely different once they are initiates or something else happens to trigger their behavior. Sometimes it's alcohol, sometimes it's something else. It speaks well of the organization if they try to HELP the brother/sister but if they cannot they must cut that person and move on.

Personally, I think it's a positive

Noper - we're trying to promote greek life in general, which is implicitly positive for the vast majority of us. We have nothing to hide - why not discuss openly both the positives and the negatives? Perhaps this will lead to helping people and chapters deal with the negatives as well.

Again - we have nothing to hide.

Lynn, you've made a good point with your post and I understand where you're coming from! But I think that, while we are trying to promote Greek Life, we owe it to potential new members to discuss things frankly. This board hasn't shied away from discussing racism, hazing or elitism, all of which are valid topics, so we should be able to discuss all things Greek-related, positive or not.

I think the fact that there are so many of us greeks here representing our GLOs says something positive about Greek life, because it shows that we care about our organizations and greeks in general enough that we spend some of our free time sharing thoughts and ideas with likeminded people.

Plus, I'm sure that the people who read my initial post understand that that former sister of mine was one individual and was far from the norm for my chapter and, certainly, for my sorority. Believe me, we would not be celebrating our 100th Anniversary this year if every sister had been like her!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the subject though, it definitely made me think long and hard about my reply!

I wish that people would be able to realize that every chapter has one or two "bad apples" and not take offense to it, but you never know who might be wandering around GC reading these posts. Like the phrase "buyer beware," we should think of "poster beware"...especially if you are a collegian. Alums have a lot more freedom to say what they want.

However, yes, there are people in my chapter that I wish I didn't share letters with, who I don't feel portray our sorority in the best light. Like Forrest Gump said, "...and that's all I have to say about that."

Re: Embarassing Brother/Sister?

You know . . . this description would probably make a pretty popular Fraternity Brother lol . . . ot at least one that would be a source of stories we all would find funny . . .

That pesky double standard . . . .

Certainly urinating in front of a fraternity house (or anywhere actually) wouldn't be worthy of comment .

My roommate sophmore year was the sloppiest, meanest drunk I have ever run across in my life! It was a rare weekend night when a Chi-O or a KD didn't knock on my door and say, "Um, Tracy, Allyssa is passed out on the landing" (They lived on the two floors above us so they had to pass our landing on the way to their suites) More of her shining moments included cussing out a pledge and her from-home boyfriend at a football game, stealing some guy's prescription eyeglasses at a party and dropping them down a sewer on the way home, urinating on the sidewalk in front of a fraternity house, stalking the girlfriend of a guy she was interested in....the list goes on and on. After I graduated she finally got her pin pulled for something or other so I'm relieved to say she's no longer my sister.

Anyone like that ever sneak into YOUR GLO?

There's this one brother in our house who, while being a nice guy, sits there and vents about things. Being in a fraternity should be condusive to communication. That way he wouldn't have to go into "Evil Mode" (as we call it) every now and then.

There's no realy "bad apples" in our house. All the bad ones on our campus seem to go to TKE.

Sure, we've got a couple of members whose behavior sometimes makes everyone a little nervous. But, we're all sisters (as cheesy as that sounds) and just like real sisters, you don't always agree with each other. Sometimes some distance is all you need to regain perspective on why someone really is a good sister. And if not, there's always the Standards Board
