Kris,
I don't know about protecting your letters, etc... but--
http://www-scf.usc.edu/~zetasphi/zeta.htm
that is the USC chapter's website, they claim to be the alpha chapter, why not start with a letter informing them that they are NOT the Alpha chapter...
Greek Life at USC is very centered on NPC/NPHC/IFC GLOs, so my guess is Zeta Sigma Phi at USC is either a MCGLO or a very small local club.

You would have quite a difficult time incorporating copyright or patent laws and getting the letters for your own. D Phi E is an international sorority. But at Georgetown, there is a service fraternity called Delta Phi Epsilon. There is really nothing to do about it. I mean, I'm sure there is patent or copyright laws that protect you if you get them done in time, but you'd have to see what that entailed, which I'm sure would involve lawyers, attorney fees and much more. Contact your campus lawyer, as I'm sure there is one available, or even the campus ombudsman.

There is a sorority Alpha Phi and an honorary Alpha Phi. Generally, it's a courtesy not to use the letters of other groups, but if they are different sorts of orgs it may happen.
Unfortunately, this other group is the Alpha - of their Zeta Sigma Phi, and since they didn't seem to copy you otherwise, there is not much you can do unless they willingly change their letters. If they aren't geographically near you, you couldn't prove they cause confusion in the "consumer's" (aka rushee's) mind.
There is a sorority at Michigan Tech called Alpha Xi Zeta, founded in 1985. Their flower is the pink rose, their mascot is "Al Fuzzie the teddy bear," their nickname is the Fuzzies, and their colors are blue and pink. It's obvious they copied Alpha Xi Delta very closely, but as far as I know, we have no legal recourse.

Sigma Kappa
Ok, so I know Sigma Kappa is an NPC sorority; the Delta Nu chapter is at Longwood. So imagine my surprise when I went to a basketball game at GMU and saw GUYS wearing Sigma Kappa letters I don't really know the story behind them, but I sure did a double-take (because of the letters, not because I thought the guys were hot or anything)

Perhaps they were some slightly confused Kappa Sigmas?

Why not contact them and see if you can join up together!
Remember, over the years the Fraternitys/Soroitys have merged so they could grow!
At one time LXA and TKE talked of merging, but LXA merged with TKN and it became and still is the largest merger in GreekDom!
You may if it works out change a few things but the Culmanation of our Badge, Coat of Arms and Associate Pin have all come from this!
Stranger things have happened!
I know sometimes when I look back, that I should have tried to expand my Local to become a National!
But I am a LXA and will always be so!

Alpha Theta Chi
Alpha Theta Chi shares the name with many groups.
Sororities:
University of Michigan-Flint, Michigan
Vincennes University-Vincennes, Indiana
Hamilton College-Clinton, New York
Bethany College-Lindsborg, Kansas
Fraternities:
Trinity University-San Antonio, Texas
Hope College-Holland, Michigan
Honorary:
I think it is based out of Alabama.
There are a few other groups out there that I can't think of right now.
We don't mind sharing our name. We have actually talked to members from other chapters and discussed meeting up with them.
Unless they try to come to your campus and take over I wouldn't worry to much about it. There are a ton of groups out there that share a name...but they ARE different!
Have a nice day
