Moving Out!!!

I've decided to move out of my parents house. What was your experience being on your own for the first time? I went away to college for 1.5 years so I have an idea.

I'm soooo excited!

I'm a college senior and I live far from home for now, I rarely go home because something always keeps me at school. I am still somewhat dependent on my parents until May.
My mother has informed me that there will be NO moving back in.
I can't believe it ! I mean fine I've lived in the dorms for almost for years but that was all courtesy of my parents money, the only bills I had to pay were those non-school related bills I incurred by myself.
I'm scared to be really on my own, real bills, real responsibilities, real life. I don't want to do it! I just pray everyday because I keep having horrible dreams about RENT and the landlord

Graduated HS at 18, went to college, graduated at 21, 4 months later married. I really havn't lived at my parents home 2 consecutive months since 18, I'm mid 30's now. It won't be easy at times, but it's nothing like turning the keyy in your own door. My parents spoiled me, but they also raised me to be able to be on my own, and that's what I do. Keep us posted.

Start buying your housewares and basic furniture now. Put that bed on layaway! I know you will save for your initial move, but now is a good time to get clearance goods on things like linens. The big fall/winter push is on right now. The larger nice department stores like Macy's are having their big sales now. I just finished decorating my bath room and bought some great towels that are so fluffy!

The costs will creep up like its nobody's business. Also, if you are big on cooking, make it a point to buy good cookware and cutlery. On the less expensive side, Martha Stewart has a nice stainless steel set of cookware that will run you around $100.00.

On the, I am going to keep my cookware forever side...consider All-Clad. I worked in a housewares store for 3 years part time. (Crate& Barrel) You will appreciate the longevity of your pieces over time. Also, it really pays to shop at the outlet stores of C&Bs and the like. And stores like Crate and Barrel honor purchases pretty much forever. And the higher end cookware and flatware lines have a lifetime warranty.

!
Pay cash for everything, if you can't pay cash, wait until you can. Don't fall into the credit card trap like most of us did. Never chagre furniture. Furniture stores has some of the highest interest rates(ask me how I know). Most furniture stores have a lay-a-way, so put a bedroom suit on lay-a-way now. Buy a good set that will last. A good matress too.
Walmart's have a great lay-a-way, towels, linen, comforters, plates, tv, etc.
Catch after Christmas sales, stock up.
Must have housewarming, ask for gift certificates.

Believe me, I am soaking all of this advice up!!!

I really don't have to buy silverware, appliances, dishes, and things as such, since I lived on campus for three years (AND I BOUGHT THE GOOOOOD STUFF!

) But I am going to take Finer Woman's advice and check the linen sales.

I also agree about the buying everything in cash idea. I already plan on putting some furniture on layaway come December.

I think I am going to ask for gift certificates for Christmas....

I also worked with C&B!!! Man, I miss that discount. Is there a CB2 near you? I also like Ikea.

Finerwoman, I took your advice that you gave in this thread, and I put a whole bunch of stuff on LAY A WAY.....You sure didn't lie, those costs come out of NO WHERE!!!

I just wanted to thank Finerwoman, and Special1920 for the great tips and advice on this particular topic, b/c it really helped me out. Now, I just need to figure out how to decorate on a teacher's budget. (champagne taste on a beer budget LOL)

There is NOTHING like having your own!!!

I moved out of my Mom's home in 1998...and loving it. I did as my Elders advised me and purchased little things early....like pots, dishes, linen, glasses and one month before I moved I put my furniture on lay-a-way. It was delivered 5 days after I moved in.....I had my housewarming party a week and a half afterwards, stating that whatever you bought I needed.

A couple of gifts that I received that I didn't think about .....a hammer, a screwdriver, a can opener (the old fashion one), a plunger and smoke alarms. My apartment came with the latter gift, but I changed it and put in my new ones.

I would like to pass this advice on to you that I received from my Mom: Change your locks! You may not know the people that lived there before you and you don't want to come home one day and find that you have moved....and don't know where....

My Maintenance man said he needed to have a key to get in in case of an emergency....and I gave him one....THE WRONG ONE....I was not trusting ANYONE but my Mom with keys to MY place. You don't have to change all of them either....just the top or the bottom....just so that YOU feel comfortable in your new home!

Moving out is the best thing that you can do. It will give you the chance for you to be on your own and experience new things. Hell I am trying to do the same thing.

What stores allow you to put furniture on lawaway? I made the mistake of charging my furniture on my credit card. a big NO NO!!!!
