Quinnipiac Theta Chapter Cancels Philanthropy
The Quinnipiac University chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta has cancelled their "Queso for CASA" philanthropy because a student complained that using maracas on an event poster for a Fiesta Themed event was "culturally insenstive" .
Honestly, this is bull shit, and it's ridiculous because the girl complaining grew up in foster care and actually personally benefited from the charity this event was raising money for. That just doesn't sit well with me.
I understand Greeks have had many racist, inappropriate mixers recently. But this was a charity event and she was upset that the posters had maracas on it. Which I still can't understand what is so offensive about maracas?
This whole thing is ridiculous.

You don't understand why the slogan, "Nacho average philanthropy" is a problem?
And you are mad that the Theta chapter made the decision of its own volition to cancel?

I think the fundamental question is: Why is that historically white GLOs use racial / ethnic stereotypes to promote their events? Why can't you just have the event? Can't the event you are having stand on its own merit without trying to use a cultural identifier?
Besides, what do queso and maracas have to do with raising money for a worthy cause?
What is y'all's obsession with (ethnic) theme parties?

Seriously? Where does it end? Should we cancel St. Patricks day since it stereotypes the Irish as drunks? What about Cinco de Mayo? Is that too offensive? Maybe we could axe Independence Day while we're at it since it's obviously ethnically to Native Americans who lived here long before America? The level of being PC has become ridiculous.

Maybe we should do all of the above.
I think the need for historically white GLOS to use racial and ethnic stereotypes to promote their events should end. It is ridiculous.

So should Kappa Delta get rid of their Shamrock since it's Irish? Honestly what's wrong with a theme night? What about a luau, should we stop that too?
Where does it end? Honestly? Should we get rid of Thanksgiving because of the Native Americans? What about Christmas? It's offensive to not Christians.

You're insane. Truly. What else do you think we should get rid of? What about MLK Day? Presidents day? Halloween? What else?

Nothing says "I'm a member of the dominant group" like complaining about political correctness.

No, not MLK, Jr. Day. That would be just wrong.
All jesting aside, you are still missing the BIG PICTURE.
May you can explain the connection between queso and maracas as it is associated with Theta's charity? How do queso and maracas connect to helping children in the court system?
Maybe that is the point I'm missing.

Being polite to the world takes effort. Being an insensitive xenophobe (and you can add misogynist although that doesn't apply in this case) is remarkably easy. The guideline that could be used is "could this offend anyone for any reason?" and if the answer is yes, maybe think for a moment about whether that offense is worth it.
I don't know of any Irish people who are offended by St. Patrick's Day events or symbols, but I do know of plenty of Latinas who are in the "I Am Not A Costume" camp. So maybe avoiding it would be prudent.
And yes, the historically inaccurate depiction of Thanksgiving is pretty damned offensive. When used as a day to give thanks, celebrate the harvest, great. Pilgrims and Indians? Not cool. We should all be smart enough and well enough educated to know that the way we were taught is not just wrong but harmful to an entire culture. Why be that person?

The event was an all you can eat nacho night, so they went with a play on the word nacho and maracas because they're festive. I guess they could serve something less controversial?

Here is the continuum:
Dumb -------------- Insensitive ----------------- Racist
Something can be considered dumb and insensitive without it being considered "racist". Something being dumb and insensitive is enough to axe it without question. It is fine to have nachos but there is a thin line between "food theme" and "ethnic and cultural theme" when you're talking about certain types of foods.
And, in case anyone tries to pretend this is another colorblind topic in which race is being randomly added by the GC Race Warriors, every topic has to do with race as long as every human has a race, ethnicity, culture, etc.
