Our bid day is the evening on the same day as preference (which is in the morning on a Sunday). All the sororities meet at what is called University Park where there's almost like a small outdoor arena built into the side of a small hill. All of the sororities get there early and sit on the hill and wait for the girls (who meet at the Union, open their bids all together and then walk over together). The new members, one by one (or sometimes together if they're going to the same sorority) announce over a microphone what their name is and which sorority they're a proud new member of. Then a few (or a lot) of the girls in that sorority run out and hug her (sometimes accidently knock her over!) and bring her to back to their group and give her balloons, flowers, t-shirts all that stuff. And then after the girls are done, the Rho Chi's and Panhell E-board go up one by one (they've got their letters tied around their waist) and say what Rho Chi group they were and say that they're so happy to be going home to ____ and take their letters of their waist and hold them up. And we all run out and get them. It's neat b/c the PNM's always try to guess what sorority their rho chis are in, and it's fun for them to see who is in what sorority. It's really emotional for the actives and rho chis though, sometimes we can't hold ourselves back long enough from running out to bring them home. And then afterwards the sororities usually take the girls back to their house or go out to dinner or something. I really like the way we do bid day. I can't wait to hear what other schools do!

Our bid day was so neat.....at our student center we had a big open plaza out front where bid day would be held. The prospectives would go upstairs at the student center to get their bid, and all the fraternities and sororities were outside in the plaza with balloons, flags, so on......we always knew who our girls were, so as they came down the steps and outside we would run up and grab them and take them back to our group where they would get their shirt and stuff. Then after a couple hours when all the bids were out, the PXs would line up in front of the big windows on the second floor, which overlooks the plaza.....then they would take off their PX shirts and they'd have their real letters underneath.

We don't participate in formal rush yet since we are local (thats changing in the next few weeks) but how we do it is we have like one or 2 girls sitting in front of the office of greek life the day after pref and then they go to whatever location the bid says for bid day. We didn't have a real extravagent bid day when I went through because I was in the 2nd pledge class. My sorority is a year old. But the 3rd pledge class we went to the Intrumurials Building and played volleyball and took pictures and the new members got their shirt and cup and found out who their big sisters were. Then the 4th pledge class the weather was nice so we went by the local river and had a picnic type thing and took pictures in front of our newly created letters and the new members got their bid day shirts and cups and found out who their big sis was. We are having another open recruitment like in two weeks so It will be interesting to see what we do for our 6th pledge class on bid day.

All the Houses meet in the Stadium (which is outdoors and nice in August) and they all have bid day shirts on, and are carrying "Bid Buckets" full of GLO stuff (keyrings, notepads, letters, etc) and each has a bid day shirt in it as well. We also have balloons in each house color attached to the buckets (some houses have the money and carry in Ballon arches in the house colors, and they just look so neat!) and HUGE banners or Letters that we carry in front of each group. Everyone sings house songs and cheers and waits for the Rushees/PNM to come into the starium in their Rho Chi groups. Then they sit in a line and the Rho Chi's get in the front on the lines (wearing their house bid day shirt underneath their RX shirt) and by now all the Houses are cheering "We want our Rho Chi's" sooo loud! Then, one by one, the RX's reveal their houses and usually get tackled before they can even run back to the groups. It's so fun to see how each group will meet their RX.. sometimes they can still stand up, and sometimes it's just a huge pile! Once all the RX's are back at their houses, (now we start cheering "We want our Rushees!") Pan tells the PNM's to open their bid cards and then they run to the House they got (or walk out of the stadium if they didn't) and it's more singing and picture taking and hugging. It is so high energy and people come to the stadium just to watch! I got to watch this year in the stands (even tho I got asked to come down to greet our PNM's, I wanted to see it from the other side) and it is really an amazing thing to see...

That sounds like an awesome time, but I would hate to be one of those girls walking out of the stadium

In the fall we have our bid day in the stadium below the greek dorm. First the rushies are all given bid cards in large manila envelopes so they can't tell what is in them and lead to the stadium where they sit on the bleachers on top of thier bid cards. Then each house comes out singing, dressed in their bid day shirts and carying cups of goodies and tons and tons of ballons. Then when everyone is there the Rho Chis do a song and a "strip tease" with ther PX shirts on top and then letter shirts from other sororities until they get down to the bid day shirt from their sororities. After that the rushees are able to get off their bid cards and open them and they run out to their houses, or to thier rho chis if they are sad....
In the spring the girls have from 12-5 to sign their bid cards so they go to the greek life office get as many bids as they were given then they have to decide and sign one. When they sign a card they are given an invitation to our bid day party with food, buckets tshirts and gettin to know everybody. The whole week after bid day is called Alpha week and there are activities for the NM and actives to get to know eachother everyday.

For our bid day, all the houses meet up in the Student Union, and each one has their own room. Then the rushees are escorted to their GLO's room. After all of the bids have been distribued, then all of the houses go back downstairs to the main ballroom for Rho Chi revealing.

After that, Sigma Kappa, kidnaps our new members and takes them to the beach for a bonfire. There they get their bid day t-shirts, stickers, pens, and all kinds of other goodies. They also get their heart sis'.

Greek Love,
Lil Snakey K

Our Bid Day is really fun, it was intersting to read what other schools do for their bid days =) We tell all the girls to meet up in the ballroom of the Student union and they get in a line. Then they tell the Panhellenic president their name, a card is given to them. They open it and it is an invitation from whatever sorority they got a bid to. Then they go sit in the designated area where they meet their new sisters. (they haven't met any of the already members yet, that comes later.) Then the rho chi's get up on the stage and do a little dance taking off their Rho Chi shirts and revealing their letters and announcing which house they are a part of. The Rho Chi's of that chapter then take their girls out to the ampitheater outside the student union and each sorority is waiting for their new girls to come down. Lots of cheering and yelling and hugs etc. THe new girls are bombarded with gifts and their bid day t shirts. They then go and take their first picture on the steps and then we have bid day parties. My chapter went to one of our sisters houses and we had a pool party and bbq. It is also tradition in my chapter to go with any of the girls that want to get a piercing or tattoo etc. (we don't make them of course lol) But last bid day one girl wanted her navel done so we all went with her. It was fun. I can't wait till next bid day on Sept. 9, 2002~ =)

At my school, each PNM meets individually with her rho chi to get her bid or to learn that she didn't match. Each PNM who gets a bid can then either accept it, defer it for 2 days or so, or decline it. If she accepts, she then goes to her sorority's bid day party and gets lots of gifts. If she defers, she still goes to the party, but doesn't get any gifts unless and until she decides to sign. If she declines, or if she didn't match, she just goes home.

Does anyone else think it's cruel to have PNMs who didn't match show up to a big bid day event, excitedly tear open an envelope, and find that it's just a letter from Panhel notifying them that they didn't match?

I went through informal rush. On my bid day, my roommate and I waited in our room for our bids to be slipped under my door. All of a sudden, we each received a bid inviting us to pledge D Phi E. I was having dinner with my literature class at my professor's house so I had to leave before we heard from Alpha Phi. When I got back, my roomie told me that we were both invited to be founding sisters of that chapter of Alpha Phi. My roommate went Alpha Phi and I went DPhiE!
All that I remember about formal rush is that all the women who handed in bid cards went to the University Union to see if they were extended bids. I was a weird sight because so many of these women were elated and thrilled and a handful were devastated as they learned that they recieved no bid.

It was really nerve-wracking---I couldn't sleep the night before, and then in the late afternoon we had to run to our Rho Chi to be handed our bid, then we ran into that chapter room. I was greeted by my singing new sisters, given a lei (our Bid Day was Hawaiian themed), a tote bag w/goodies, and then we played get-to-know-you games. Then we went to the advisor's house & had a cook-out & played more games. Wow, seems like so long ago even though it was just last semester LOL.

I would hate to be one of those girls who got a letter saying I didn't match. Since UNLV's greek system is pretty small, almost all the girls that rushed received a bid from one of the 5 sororities on campus.

Bid Day for sororities has been called Walk here, and fraternities had "Bid Night Madness." This year they decided to have fraternities and sororities all together. So all of us lined up in this big field in kind of a semicircle around the back of a building, and the girls and guys came out of the building one by one, in alphabetical order. Then the IFC president announced each person's name and where they were going, and as he did they ran to their respective fraternity/sorority. A large percentage of the college's population is Greek, so a lot of the student body shows up to watch.

It's a lot of fun because we're all out there in our walk shirts and we have no idea who is running to us, and we run out to meet them and put their new member shirts on them. My throat is always really sore after this event from all the cheering and screaming
