Had to resist the temptation to make a snarky comment about the SK one. "Yeah, we almost never take short girls." Kidding of course.
For the NPC groups, I literally thought "I guess the non-blonde is supposed to be the non-typical one".

It's a shame I can't insert the eyeroll smiley icon from my phone.

Just the other day I rolled my eyes at the white people in black orgs photo and said "You NEVER see predominately white organizations parading their minority members around like a prize!"
Welp.

(I am not against integration, obviously. I am against the human zoo nature of the photos.)

The post really reinforced to me that there are still parts of the country where this is special.
Around here a non white girl in an NPC is nothing to get excited about.

What's the point of this display (not the thread)?
Non-Black Deltas are not special and are not anything to get excited about. That's because non-Black Deltas will ALWAYS be a minority. Delta officially doesn't discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, and culture but we are an historically and predominantly Black sorority that (at the aggregate) is not playing the "racial diversity game".

My perception is the point of the BF article is that the first picture had caused some buzz because "OMG, white people in black groups." The article was to point out all sorts of ethnicities join all sorts of groups and those people do it for their own reasons.

Unfortunately, that's not the case everywhere.

Yes...yes...that will continue to be the case as long as the NPC pretends to represent "the sororities" and pretends it is mere coincidence that NPC sororities are historically and currently predominantly white.
/this may be a fun thread

Seriously. I can't keep up with all the backgrounds and cultures in the chapter where I advise (however, I try my best!).

Anyone calling for integration of the D9 is an idiot, but I'm sure they are out there.

Does this imply that D9 is segregated? Serious question.
Our organizations serve "our" communities, but that doesn't always imply African-American communities. Sigma's mission statement is broad enough to serve many populations.
Quote:
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority's aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and education of youth are the hallmarks of the organization's programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho addresses concerns that impact society educationally, civically, and economically.
|
Now, most people might read "the community" as "the black/African-American community". That may be true, but if you look at our programming, there's a diversity in what "the community" is.
In stating membership requirements, race/ethnicity isn't implied either. I would hope, locally, chapters aren't insinuating potential members NEED to be black to be considered.
Quote:
New members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. are accepted on both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Potential graduate members must hold a degree from a four-year accredited educational institution.
A woman may be admitted for membership in an undergraduate chapter only while in attendance at a four-year accredited college or university, or in a liberal arts/transfer program of a junior or community college, once they submit proof of intention to enter and obtain a degree from a four-year school.
Candidates may be accepted for undergraduate membership after successfully completing one quarter, semester, or trimester. The cumulative grade point average required for membership is 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).
|
Our history and pictures reflect who we are as a predominately black membership, and even in that, there's a diversity of that identity. Do we have non-black members? For sure. Do they need to be represented more in our online content to "prove" our racial/ethnic diversity? About as much as your inter/national site would.
I'm just saying, it took me 7 national NPC sorority websites to get to a non-white face. Which perhaps isn't terrible out of 26, but still.

I'm not trying to overstep here, and I'm sorry if I did. The fact that some NPC chapters don't have black members is a problem. The fact that some D9 chapters don't have white members is not. This article presents the two as though they are equivalent, and while it does so in a celebratory manner, it's still not a good look.
