Rho Chi Changes

So in the past at my school each sorority chose 4 women to represent them as Rho Chis. This year panhellenic told us to give them eight women's names and they would select our four for us. Does anyone else have Rho Chis chosen like this? Why do they do it this way? Does it alleviate any problems? Just wondering why they suddenly changed it, in our chapter it is a huge honor to be given the status of a rho chi and now panhellenic has taken away an honor we can give a sister and taken it upon themselves. It just kind of bothers me.

I know a little bit about this on my campus because I'm in the process myself. Each sorority accepts applications (usually tons apply) and then reviews them, and holds interviews. They submit their four best candidates to Panhellenic. Four delegates from each of our ten sororities means Panhellenic interviews forty potential Rho Chi's and chooses from them - usually about thirty are chosen. Every sorority must have at least one representative who becomes a Rho Chi, so no group gets left out. The past few years, all of my sorority's candidates have been chosen, so it's a li'l bit of pressure! My interview with Panhel is on Thursday afternoon so wish me luck!!

The panhellenic council at New Mexico State Univ. chooses their recruitment councilors from applications and interviews.

See their web page

for lots of information about their application and selection process.

My sorority chooses the first three people in initation order who are interested. They must be in good standing. Then they apply, are interviwed, and usually are all taken...we wouldn't let them apply if they weren't qualified. I don't know if all the sororities do it this way though.

Each sorority here elects up to four ladies to apply. They have to be people who have been an initiated member for at least a full academic year, have at least a 2.5 (I think) gpa, etc. We have a vote to elect the four people, and they send in their applications to Panhellenic who takes over the process from there. I think last fall there were around 10 or 15 Rho Chis.

We elect one woman from our group to be a Rho Chi, as do the other 9 sororities. When only 60 women are going through recruitment, you don't need more than 10 Rho Chis!

10 for only 60? I guess I underestimated...we probably had more like 20 Rho Chis with nearly 300 of us going through recruitment. Our groups were really big anyway...not even sure how many were in my group, although it did get smaller as some girls decided recruitment wasn't for them.

On my campus you filled out your application, the sorority signed off on it that you were a member in good standing and then the apps. go to panhellenic, they then have interviews and things of that nature. Being a Rho Chi at my school is actually pretty competitive. They choose 20, and it could be any number from any sorority. (ie. my glo had 6 girls apply and they only took 4, while another glo had 10 apply and only took 2). The PX's are choosen by the IFC, PHC, and NPHC directors, the director of student life, and the director of greek life. so there isn't any other students who choose them. and once you are choosen you dissafiliate then.

We had to go through an application/interview process as well. My school has 5 sororities - 4 large and one (mine) relatively small - so each of the 4 big houses had to provide 4 PXs, and mine had to provide one.

The year I was a PX, each of the 4 big sororities was asked for 6 candidates of which the Panhel rush committee would select 4. My sorority was asked for 2 candidates of which Panhel would select one, but I was the only one interested that year. (The committee could have rejected me and asked for another application from my sorority if they had so wished, but they didn't )

So we had 17 PXs for about 150 rushees.
