Cool High School Service Organizations

Hey there!

I'm wondering, how do you guys feel about High School Service Organizations?? In case you aren't familiar with these organizations, they are basically sisterhoods and brotherhoods in High Schools that have pledge processes, rituals, secrets, colors, mottoes and things as such. They focus mainly on sisterhood/brotherhood, scholarship and community service. They were founded by high school students and mostly have advisers that are Greek affiliated. They are not nationally recognized but they DO have chapters that are growing rapidly.

So what do you think?? Ever heard of them?? Like them? Dislike them? Feel annoyed? Honored? Flattered??

And could one's participation in a group as such be a hindrance to later admittance to a BGLO? Do you guys find that people with this type of history have a sense of entitlement?

I have taken the time in posting this to make sure that the post is as objective as possible to make sure that I do not seem biased or disrespectful to anyone's organizations.

I thank you in advance for your honest and kind responses.

I am a bit confused. The sunglasses face suggests bias -- that you don't like them. Perhaps remove the icon ?

Can't remove the face. I only see edit options for the text so it will have to stay as as. Surely someone will be able to respond regardless of something as trivial as an emoticon (especially seeing as I stated that I am NOT biased).

NPC perspective here...but in HS, I'd focus on grades and being involved in a variety of extra curricular activities (which could include service organizations, but I'd stick to ones like NHS or Key Club) - and leave sorority/fraternity-like organizations for College.

I have the nagging recall that at one point NPHC orgs had HS sponsored clubs/organizations at one point -- but no idea if that info is current and it's out of my "lane" anyway. I think it'd be safe to stick to clubs sponsored by your school or anther community group (like church or library or nature center).

ETA - I'm glad you changed your response above to PinkSequins...the first response was very disrespectful and snarky.

Thank you. I don't recall asking for your opinion about the edited response, hence it being edited but thank you for that too.

You don't need to ask for someone's opinion on something in order for them to give it to you.

Just saying.

They are a hindrance. Do not join one. Good bye now.

Anybody willing to actually answer my question, I'd appreciate it! I'm not really interested in answers to anything other than what was initially asked. BTW, I'm not in high school and I'm not looking to join one. I'm a sociology major and I'm interested in how you guys feel about the similarities in the culture between High School "Sororities and Fraternities" and College Sororities and Fraternities. I didn't think it was necessary to give a spiel on that motive but I feel that, this may be the only way to get an honest and point-blank answer. So, if you could oblige, that would be great! If not, point me in the direction of those who can!

Thanks!

My answer is not going to be a popular one, but here goes. I was a member of a national high school sorority. I was not hazed. I loved my time as a member, and I do not regret it. I learned about parliamentary procedure. We ran annual philanthropy events and fundraisers for a charity that was chosen by a vote at the sorority's national convention each year. I learned to organize and lead others. We had an annual formal, so I learned what goes into planning and hosting a party. We had chapter mothers who were involved and at every event who served essentially as chapter advisors. We were never allowed to just be unchaperoned and get into trouble. This organization is independent of any other organization, so it's not like the NPHC service orgs you mentioned.

Would I encourage someone to be a member of a high school sorority/fraternity in general? No. primarily because there is likely not the level of organization and risk management that was present in our sorority. There was another sorority in town that did NOT have those things, and we were worlds apart as far as hazing and supervision and general risk management. Would I encourage someone to be a member of what I experienced? Absolutely.

If you are doing research you for damn sure need to disclose that.

@amiblue? Thanks for your response!

@Sen's Revenge Had this been for a formal study, I would have disclosed that from the beginning but seeing as it isn't, I didn't. BTW, I don't owe you this explanation but I figured it was worth you understanding the method to my madness.

So from your post you are saying that these organizations exist today? And are you saying these organizations are predominately African American?

I know that such groups were banned from secondary schools back in the 1920s, but then they started popping up again in the 1960s. (I suspect that many of the old groups never ceased to exist, but just went underground.)

I love to learn more about what the names of groups are in you want to PM me.

Cheers.

@badgebuy Yes, they do still exist today and yes they are predominately African American.

Groups LIKE these were banned and I assume that this is the reason that they don't refer to themselves as sororities and fraternities but as service organizations (hence the quotation marks).

I WOULD disclose the names of said organizations BUT I fear some type of retaliation (not necessarily on your part) being done toward those groups.

Thanks for your response!
