Question Going Greek - How?

Hi! I'm an absolute newbie, and I would like to ask a few questions. I'm a guy, going to the US, and i'm from singapore. I'm malay.

Okay. My situation. I'll be entering cornell this fall. I've never been to america, and seen lots of movies about frats and sors. Will greek houses accept foreigners, esp those at an ivy like cornell? WHats life in a greek really like? Will I get to sleep around and stuff? I'm just dying to get laid. Do you really have wild parties with equally wild sex?

When I go to the US, the last thing I want to do is hand around with other singaporeans, hence a frat. Are there lots of asians in frats, will we be discriminated against?

Yall will probably bite my head off after I post this but frankly I don't give a ish..

theprof--if your outlook on Greek life in America is shaped by watching movies like Animal House and the Revenge of the Nerds series--then I feel sorry for you, because most of us don't go Greek for the sole purpose of getting laid.

If you're dying to get laid then look elsewhere because you really don't need Greek life to do so. Consult the yellow pages or better yet solicit the services of a prostitute!

Prof just remember--fraternities won't base their membership on the amount of your sexual drive.

Hi Prof! What a wonderful attitude you have! When you go through rush, make sure you remember to ask the brothers the questions that you posted on here. That way, all of the fraternities will be able to see immediately what a quality guy you are and what an asset you'd be to their house. Why, I'm sure you'll have your choice of any fraternity at your school!!!

Is this a real post?
Well anyway if it is,theprof you watch a tad bit too much tv, thats Hollywoods version of greeklife and not the real live version of greek life.
If your looking just to get laid (does anyone really use that term anymore?), then u might want to drop a classified somewhere, or catch a flick, but don't bother us greeks, cause I am not too sure how many will help ya

LOL DGPhoney--awesome message. This poster is either mentally challenged or an imposter trying to fish for information and get one of us Greeks to say something like "oh ya, we all joined to get laid" . Um, no...we're not DUMB here, buddy! I'm sorry if you really are dumb and asked this question in earnest, but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, you have to be kidding.

I know a lot of Greeks from a lot of schools across the country, and I can say this with confidence: I DO NOT KNOW ANYONE (REPEAT: ANYONE) WHO JOINED A SORORITY OR FRATERNITY FOR THE PURPOSE OF GETTING LAID. If that's what you're looking for, then go hang out at a strip club or something. We Greeks are too busy building bonds that last and helping out the community to help you live out your pathetic sexual fantasies. GRRRR

I know that the rest of you have answered this poster's question already, and you've done it well...but I just HAD to chime in because it was too ridiculous.

Hey Guys,

How about giving the guy a break? I know we have a lot of people who like to make trouble on here, but we should give people the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise right? He is from a different culture where his perceptions of fraternites and sororities probably is shaped by movies and what he sees in the media.

theProf- The greek system is NOT about parties and getting laid. Read some of the posts on here about greek activities and concerns. And do some research about Greek Lettered organizations.

Zeta Ace, you are right. I have a tendency to go off when ever the terms "get laid lots" and "rush" are put in the same thought. People should be free to ask questions, but also need to accept responsibility for them. I understand that Singapore is a different culture, but maybe I'm just being hard on him because I've lived there and Singapore has a VERY large American community. Anyway, theprof--I think you get the point. I'd be happy to answer any other questions...it's just difficult to have to address the greek system/excessive sex thing again and again.

Hey y'all,

Guess what! I am Indonesian, and I came straight from Indonesia for college. And I am a member of Theta Delta Chi here at Iowa State University!
We have our chapter at Cornell, and I am pretty sure they will accept international students. I know several international students in our M.I.T. chapter, and we don't have policy against any international students. I think it would be great experiences for every international students that come to the states.

Email me for more information, my email is queequek@iastate.edu. I am willing to help.

Proud to be Greek!

<lifesaver pretending he's "Big" form Sex in the city, back when he was on Law and Order, conducting an investigation>

One of my best friends in college is Malay, she was from Kuala Lumpor, and I can assure you the malay culture is such that SHE would never use the word "laid" in a sentence. Their culture is way more conservative than that. I understand everyone is not the same, jsut as I detest when GDI's consider all greeks the same. I am just saying that I find this post suspect. FOR GODS SAKE THEY DONT EVEN HUG IN THEIR CULTURE, so why's this dude gonna get up in here talking about "laid" and stuff. (Story: I was at the airport dropping Siu Sun and her mother off for their flight back to KL for the summer. I got out and hugged Siu and then her mother goodbye, I thought they both were going to faint. Siu later told me she doesnt even hug her mother. Just not done in their culture.) They are a very private culture, so I have trouble thinking a person who is culturally Malay could just up and post that. Dont see it.

Then again, lifesaver has been proven wrong....

No Lifesaver, you are totally right on about that. I knew something was *fishy* about the post and it was probably an imposter trying to get someone to say something stupid.
