How would you feel?

Just a random question:

How would you feel if you had a friend at another school, and that school's Greek system had a chapter of your fraternity/sorority that was known as a house of loosers and was not considered to be a socially acceptable house, and your friend was joking around and bagging on them to you? Would you be offended because they are still your brothers/sisters? Would you take it as a joke and realize that houses are different at every campus?

I've personally run into a situation like that. I've had random people that I've encountered from another school tell me what my sorority was like on their campus and joke or poke fun. I simply ignore their statements and just remind them that each chapter will be different.
Personally I like to keep in mind something one of my theatre directors once said... you're only as strong as your weakest character. I believe that whole heartidly. So I hope that helps to put things into perspective.
If it were a friend that was making the comments I might suggest reminding them how much your organization means to you and you'd rather not hear them bad mouth it...regardless.

I'm sure a lot of people have experienced this problem before. I personally would do two things. First, I would defend my chapter at that school. I'm not saying to beat up your friend, but you should let them know that you dont appreciate them dogging a part of your GLO. Just because you go to different schools doesnt mean you arent part of the same organization.

And Second, I would check out that school's chapter to see if the buzz is true. If it is, try to help them out. Maybe they've fallen up on bad times and could use some help. A stronger chapter at their school helps to make a stronger national organization over all.

I have had this happen to me before too. It pisses me off if anyone bashes on my org. One chapter is not a reflection of all the chapters of that org. as a whole. If a chapter has fallen under bad times and your chapter is within driving distance then an effort should be made to go and help these brothers/sisters. I have been able to go and help with rush with a chapter in our state and I loved every minute of it. There is no such thing as a brother/sister who is not cool enough to hang out with. With our national convention coming up I am sure that I am in for a huge culture shock when I get there, but regardless of who I meet, the fact will remain that every man there is a brother.

AMEN! This is such good advice When you go to convention, you may feel awkward at first, but I guarantee by the end, you'll feel like you have a whole new fraternity of brothers, along with those from your own chapter.

I agree with most of what's been said. Every chapter of every frat is different and none are consistently strong throughout...sorry to say that. I remember someone saying something about one of our chapters last year and because of that we started emailing those guys and did a whole bunch of events that helped them boost their numbers.

And on another note, being the popular snobby glo on campus doesn't make you the best. I'd rather be in a fraternity where I know that if I have a problem I can get help rather than one where I can be unhappy on the inside and just radiant on the outside.
