Interesting ways to go over Alcohol/ Hazing Policies

Hey. I'm the Chapter Life Vice President of Alpha Xi Delta. I am in charge of going over Alcohol and Hazing Policies. In the past, we have just read it and everyone gets bored. Does anyone have any creative ways to go over them? Thanks!

Act them out. "This is what NOT to do".

Only kidding. But it wouldn't be boring.

Jigsaw. Have small groups read a part and summarize for the entire chapter.

Regarding the alcohol part, Mary Peterson gives a lecture around the country called Alcohol Sex and Stress. She's been giving it for YEARS (it was fairly new when I saw it for the first time in 1985 or so). The information doesn't change and how college kids react in these scenarios also doesn't change. Anyway, maybe you can find a video of the lecture and tie in hazing to the discussion. I was able to find some info on her/the lecture from google.

Acting out good/bad behavior is actually a good way to go, starting with DUH, that's hazing to much more subtle versions that can lead to discussion about what is and is not acceptable. We here on GC know that there are some points we will argue back and forth about if it is or isn't hazing. The sorority is pretty black and white on the issue, so you can discuss and then make clear that FHQ has the final answer, and their answer is X.

I really like this idea. As an orientation leader at my school, we had to cover alcohol and drugs (and other stuff like how to keep up on your studies amid the many distractions of a new environment, managing money, campus safety, etc.), and several of the orientation leaders put on skits.

The incoming freshman loved it. You can provide a serious message in something humorous. The most important thing is to make the message resonate with the members.

Good luck, and remember you can go up the line and work with advisers and other chapters for ideas that might have worked in other chapters.

Have an alumna come and do a presentation, maybe a lawyer. Someone who can not only explain the policies, but the why behind them.
