The elementary school in the middle of Galtinburg is Pi Beta Phi Elementary. The Greek letters adorn the gym floor, the curtains in the auditorium, and other spots throughout the school. The school celebrates its beginnings as the Pi Beta Phi Settlement School authorized by the 1910 Pi Beta Phi convention.
On the weekend of November 2, 2012, Della “Miss Dell” Gillette, the first Pi Beta Phi teacher at the Settlement School, returned to Gatlinburg. A statue created by sculptor Doug Young adorns the Centennial Plaza in front of the Arrowcraft Shop on the Parkway. Pi Beta Phis from across the country and Canada, as well as distinguished guests, including descendents of Pi Phi teachers, students and Settlement School Committee members, gathered to dedicate the plaza and unveil the statue of Miss Dell handing a book to a young student.
