Thanks Soror...
I know about relocation. I may have to go to a couple of other places to get a job. Only time will tell...

Coming from a not so recent grad but one who recently changed job markets, be open to as much as you can, especially relocation.
The job markets are tough right now. Stay strong and faithful to your vision.

I agree... be open to relocation (or start your own thing, if you want).
Pray and keep looking. Send in resumes to jobs that you see yourself working in and maybe slightly under your normal targets. All you want now is an INTERVIEW OR A CALL BACK. You can even appear at the business and introduce yourself. Talk to people there and see if they are hiring. If not, ask if they know of other places they could refer you to. Check newspapers, elementary thru high schools, colleges, universities, job agencies, Job Junction, One-Stop Career stations, county, city, and state web sites and CALL too. Even the library and hospitals. I did all this and received 2 interviews, and later decided to work on my company full time.
I graduated August 2002 and could not find a job. Relocation was not an option for me. Luckily I had started a full service web design and hosting company a couple of months before my graduation.
Little did I know, that this would help me. After searching everywhere and unable to find a job in my field (Information Technology or anything related to computers), I decided to take a shot at it and work on my business. People told me to get any job until I found a better one, etc. I decided to work on my company instead. The beginning took some time with the help of friends and family for financial support.
Now, I am glad I did this; I enjoy what I do and do what I want. It's not easy and it's tough, but it's fun too.
I have spoken to some sorors already who are starting or planning their own business as well. Find a niche, use your skills, and just do it.

Wow, D.Com,thanks!
I thought about my options, and I really don't want to leave home. I don't have enough money to put gas in my car! But anyhoo...I really want to go into law enforcement, right now, the police force. Unfortunately, my hometown is not hiring, and the other city that is hiring close to me, I hate with a passion.
But I have been on some promising interviews in the meantime. It's just interesting how many people that I have graduated with do not have a job! My sands, who graduated last year, it took her 6 months! I know my money will NOT stretch that far, so I might have to do the unmentionable and find a little job in the meantime.

Sure, no problem!
That's what sorors are for
Have you tried just finding a job in the Police Dept.? Like dispatcher, or anything IN THERE? Try your BEST to stay close to what you want to do - try to get a job in the department or in the building; at the very least get a job next to the building!
You just want to get your foot in the door. Make FRIENDS; make MANY FRIENDS when you get in. Once you are in, you will learn about more job opportunities within the department as well as the "inside scoop." This way, you'll know what's going on and then apply or talk to the appropriate people (friends) when the opening you want appears

Don't be afraid to get the "little" job.
That is what part time and temp work is for!
Good luck girl cuz I sure do feel your pain- I am not even going into my deep bitterness about the book publishing industry, lol. Let's just say that my rose-colored glasses got knocked off with a vengeance.

Well I suppose we should be happy about that- having unrealistic expectations of an industry can be deadly, and it's better to lose them before you get into it.
It's just crazy that a system that is based purely on nepotism and who-you-know can continue to thrive in this climate. And NO ONE TALKS ABOUT IT. At least in other industries you have an idea going in that it will be difficult as a woman and as a minority, but this one seems innocent of that from the outside. Some companies (AOL Time Warner I am looking at you) are worse than others (Random House actually had one whole black person working there and I wanted to hug her, lol) but the system as a whole is deeply flawed.
I just wish black authors would dos omething about it. I mean, does Sista Soulja know that the agency that represents her work does not have ONE SINLGE BLACK EMPLOYEE? I know because I interviewed there and I talked the receptionist at the company next door.
How does she reconcile that with her message? I feel like in that system THEY are the only ones who have leverage because THEIR work is making money.

Interesting post. And I would expect someone like Sister Souljah to pay attention and agitate for change.
And as a side note, what you describe is also verry similar to fashion magazines.

I graduated this past May and fortunately I don't have to deal with looking for a job because I'm attended grad school in the fall. The economy is so jacked up these days that finding a job is almost impossible. It may not be fair but nepotism is the way of the world. It truly is all about who you know. Do you attend a church? You may want to ask any of the members if they know someone who may be hiring. What about your parents? They can ask around as well. Have you found a grad/alumnae chapter yet? You may want to talk to your sorority sisters.
As someone stated before, you may have to work somewhere that has nothing to do with your interest. Just keep an open mind and remember that above all else, prayer works.
