Innovators or perps? You decide

This was mention in another GLO's forum, but I had to bring it to general forum.

While we are hung up on who should be entitled to wear gold boots and twirl canes, I came up on a fraternity (Alpha Kappa Sigma) that appears to be a hybrid of several NPHC orgs and they started a sister sorority (Kappa Sigma Phi) that seems to imply the same thing. Here is the link:

Also, I noticed that they refer to themselves as "Kappa Sigs"...very similar to the nickname for Kappa Sigma. It's kinda funny if you ask me...did anyone see the typos?

I just thought it was pretty hilarious that their first meeting IN TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS COURT was mentioned in their fraternity history.

yeah, we generally go by "Kappa Sig" . . . and yeah, also could go w/ 'kinda funny' - not trying to bag on these guys, i just love the fact that they bonded in traffic court, among other stuff

Did I read it wrong or did you? I thought it said KappasigMAN was the nickname. They don't call them selves alphas, so no perpin there. Met in traffic court. As good a place as any i guess.

Honestly, i was just clarifying that we use that nickname on a lot of campuses - really it doesn't matter if they use it too; that happens a lot. Some examples would be "kappa", "zeta", "phi kap", etc - those can be nicknames for a couple of different GLOs. All in all, i don't know enough to say if they're "perps" or whatever - i guess that's for someone more enlightened as to these things to decide

Perps? Not hardly. I get tired of seeing posts insinuating that these new orgs are somehow perping or copying existing BGLOs. There's only so many colors in the rainbow. There's only so many ways to arrange your hand. There's only so many letters in the greek alphabet. So they call themselves Alphamen. Their name is Alpha Kappa Sigma. Their only other choices are Kappas and Sigmas. There would still be complaints. I just think orgs that are just starting out get a lot of raised eyebrows for no reason. Let em do their thing.

I think the real issue (check out the guest book), is that it seems that they are trying to be a conglomerate of Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Phi Beta Sigma. Their colors are red and gray, they have canes like the Kappas, they call themselves Alphamen, and they have a constitutionally bound? sister sorority like Phi Beta Sigma--ie Alpha Kappa Sigma Phi, like Zeta Phi Beta Sigma. Someone even speculated that the sister sorority was derived by taking the middle names of Alpha KAPPA Alpha, Delta SIGMA Theta, and Zeta PHI Beta. I won't even discuss the hand signs.

I don't think they are trying to be Kappa Sigs, nor do I think that they are aware Kappa Sigs exist, but who knows?

I just find it interesting, that's all.
