Why choose a local
I'd love to hear some stories about why you chose your locals over the other groups.
I rushed my sorority after I found out I coldn't afford a national group. once I met the girls I knew that was were I was meant to be. Now i wouldn't go anyplace else for all the tea in china.

Just out of curiousity - where do you go to school and what is your local?

I choose a local for two reasons; one, and probably the most important, my friends knew the girls who started it. (I was in the first pledge class!!) Secondly, beginning Univeristy is hard and strange. I rushed, in September of my first year, and since I trust my friends, I trusted the people they trusted, so I went with the one local sorority on campus. Even though I am not a founding member of the sorority, I feel very proud of how I have helped shape it and hope that in 13 years from now, we will be international!

I joined a local Fraternity because the brothers were ones I could most identify with. There were also a lot of leadership opportunities because the membership had dropped very low in the house. Many of my freinds and I pledged the house, and by the end of this year I think we'll have tripled the membership. We'e put alot of effort into the house and have had great Alumni support(which locals sometimes have had trouble with). We don't participate in large national philanthropy projects, instead we concentrate our efforts in helping out members of our own community. I like the freedom that is associated with a local. The thing to realize that with more freedom comes greater risk and responsibility.

I joined a local for a few reasons. #1 was money! I chatted with a friend who was joining another sorority and their membership fees were so high. Then a friend on my cheerleading team asked me if I'd consider rushing her sorority....first question I asked was "How much?!" LOL! I went to an event, met the girls and I am so glad every day that I made the choice to rush my sorority! My sisters are the greatest! I came in the class after Lots-a-heart (who posted above) and I feel the same way as her....I'm not a founding member, but I'm proud of the way things are looking for our sorority...even if I have to observe from another country!
Sarah, if you're reading this, I read your post above...and you forgot something....we're not the only local (Omega Pi's local too remember?!) And of course we will be international...hopefully soon, with me going to school here in Florida in Sept! See ya in 2 weeks darlin!

Only a few months ago my best friend and I decided that we wanted to create our own sorority- for many different reasons. One of the main reasons was that all the other nationals on campus had stereotypes, age old traditions, and set images. We didn't like the fact that their ways were set and rushees had to hope for acceptance (we are almost the opposite- we get to know people and more or less invite them to rush us- of course there are some girls we don't know that rush, but for the most part it's a group of friends introducing and bringing in more friends and friends of friends....). This has built a really strong foundation in which we have grown individually and as a group- it's like getting in touch with yourselves, not getting lost in the crowd of such a huge sisterhood. Something that nearly every sister has said so far is that they weren't the typical sorority girl or didn't think they'd fit into the other nationals- finding their niche in the greek system is definitely what they did with our local. So far everything is going better than expected and will only get better I'm sure )

When I rushed there were only four sororities to chose from. Money wasn't an issue and I knew I wanted to make sure that I was joining a group that I was going love and be active with for the rest of my live. After the second night of rush I narrowed it down to one. I chose my local sorority because I seemed to fit in with them the best. A couple of the other sororities were really snotty and I didn't want to be a part of that. It was so bad that I didn't even want to their events for the rest of rush. Lets just say that I definitely made the right choice...the other sororities haven't changed much!!
Have a nice day

I am apart of a local because they stood for something different then all the other sororities on campus. Plus a lot of groups on campus were not diverse, and I wanted to be apart of a group that wasn't cookie cutter shaped (meaning not the typical deal)and also a lot of groups are really expensive, and our membership stuff is really cheap

On my campus that is the only type of sorority that we have. It is three sorority and 3 frats. I like local better because we don't have astrict guide line for how we handle business, and that we don't have to raise due unless it is neccessary. Plus, I think that it is stronger bond.

No locals at my school!
I wish we had locals on my campus because you all make them sound so great! In fact, my stepdad was a member of a local frat and he had a blast. I probably would have joined a local if we'd had them here, because I never really considered myself the "sorority type" and all the sororities at this school are more or less the same (all of them will tell you different, but honestly, folks, none are very "diverse"). Last year I decided to rush and chose to join a sorority which had just recolonized, but now that I see what being part of a national is like I wish even more that there were locals here! No offense to my sisters--I like them a lot--but had I known then what I know now I may not have joined.
When I first pledged my sorority, things were cool because we were still a colony and didn't have to follow every rule to a T, but now that we are a full chapter the national organization is watching us like a hawk. I see their point of view, but we have to answer to them for everything. Also, money is a big issue for me--shelling out sixty dollars a month in dues in addition to other fees is making my bank account look very ill indeed! Plus, I was not informed of many little rules and regulations of this organization before I initiated, which isn't really the fault of the older sisters because I'm sure they didn't know themselves. The bottom line is, in my opinion national organizations act more like a business than a sisterhood. So what if it gives me "connections" and we have a house on campus and we can say we have sisters all over the country? I wish just for once we could all focus on being friends and sharing memories instead of wading through all this red tape. I can't say I really regret joining my sorority, but I want all of you all local members out there to know that being national isn't the only way to go and I'm sort of envious of what you all have.

I am also a part of a local and I really love it. Sometimes I wish we were national when it is time to order stuff, and for more campus recognition, but being local is probably better. I really love the fact that we were founded Multicultural instead of trying to be something we are not later. I have really learned a lot from my sisters and truly feel loved. Not to mention our Fees are very affordable. Where else can you know all of your sorors nation wide.

I picked my local fraternity for many reasons.
1. We rush anyone, meaning we don't rush only the athletes and the 4.0 students. If you show interest in us, and are of good standing with the university, we give you a shot.
2. Cheaper dues and insurance by far! Not having to pay for national rmf and other various obligations is a huge relief. Tuition is enough to worry about.
3. We are dictated by the rules that our house makes. We aren't subject to a policy made by alum that are half way across the country.
4. My fraternity is a stong symbol on campus. Very involved with the campus and community.
5. The members are the greatest. Real personable guys. Good to hang out with, good to laugh and cry with, and good to tell jokes and share stories with.
6. Our established purpose as a college fraternity: The purpose of a college fraternity is not to capture awards or trophies, nor is it only to establish the best social program. But let it secure a true brotherhood of men and these things will follow. Its brothers shall strive to achieve honor and recognition above all others.

I joined my local for a few reasons, One was that my school only has locals (five sororities and four fraternaties) , second i was friends with all the guys, and lastly it just felt right, and now i know i did the right thing, our brotherhood is so tight and its just a great time.

I chose my local because my friends were going to go but then they decided not to and were like "hey go check it out and tell us about it" so I did and I was a little apprehensive because it was a sorority and had never really heard anything but bad things about the greek system but now that I'm in it I'm very happy and I feel at home. The dues are cheaper and we are somewhat small so I like that. But, we will be going national here pretty soon so I won't be able to say I'm in a local sorority for very long
