Question MCGLO Councils?

Hey all,
I was wondering, some schools have MCGLO councils, and how is that. Was this something the school choose to do, or was it something the MC orgs on that campus questered for? I go to a school where we only have NPC ,IFC and very very few NPHC's.Being that the sorority I am in is a MC org, I wanted to look into that. But I know a lot of schools don't have them. So if anyone could answer my question that would be great
Thanks All

DPGhoney,
My school just started an MGC my last semester as an undergrad (Fall 2000). It was started b/c there were quite a few orgs that didn't belong to either the NPC, IFC or the Black greek council. Also, in order to be considered officially Greek on our campus, you have to belong to one of these councils b/c these councils are under the Greek Life office. So it was brought to our attention by one of the Asian orgs on our campus to put this together so we could all be "official" (or whatever) Greeks.
When these groups all came together (there are 10 sororities and fraternities that make up the MGC), we all felt that the existing councils have not met our needs as multi-ethnic frats and sorors. In fact, 2 of the latino/a orgs (a frat and a sorority) are in the IFC and NPC, respectively. They both said that they don't get the kinda exposure that they want and they feel that they pay way too much money for something that does not address their needs as minorities and as Latino/as. These orgs focus on helping the Latino community specifically while the groups in these councils do not. Also, both these orgs felt that they'd just get a lot more exposure to the community they'd like to have in their org if they joined something that was more geared towards multi-ethnic students . This is pretty much the reason for why all the other orgs are wanting to start this council. So far, from what my sisters say, the council definitely needs work but it'll probably be something really great once all the kinks get worked out.
Hope that answers your question. If you'd like more details, I'd be happy to answer your questions.

Thanks Zchi4life,
see my school doesn't have any kind of council like that. They only recognize you if you are apart of the NPC, NPHC,IFC . We have very few locals, but we can be recognized if we apply for staus as a club or some sort of special interest group. I know some schools in Florida(yeah my hometown) have MGCLO councils. I think these councils would be a great aset to the MCGLO world, just to help all of us get that extra push on campus. Oh well maybe it's wishful thinking. Hey quick question , have you guys ever gone to the Mid -American Greek Conferences?
Thanks
DGPhoney~

DGP,

No, we've never been before. I don't think any of our other chapters have gone before either. Do you know when it is? Are non-NPC sororities allowed to go? I would like to check it sometime though. I think it would be interesting.

Thumbs up

Hi Zchi,
I checked into it about a month ago, because I heard of it from some other locals, and other national groups. But from what they told me, and what I gathered on the site, it's open to ALL orgs. I believe it takes place in February , and it has a bunch of workshops, and awards, and u meet other greeks, yada yada. But it's supposed to be very helpful and fun,etc.. I know a few locals went though. DGP is going to go this yr. Heres the website if you guys want to check it out. http://www.mgca.org
(I am oretty sure thats the right link)

ok , heres a question, or a pondering thought rather, like NPC,NPHC and IFC, all are surrounded by a major headquarters like which they all fall under. Does anyone think something like that would work for MC orgs?Or no because each MC org functions differently? What do u guys think , Just curious

DGP,
I know there IS a National Multicultural Greek Council. I haven't heard about it in a while, but one does exist. There are about 8-10 orgs involved and most of the orgs are on the east coast. When I found out about it like 2 yrs ago, they were still trying to get everything together (Constitution, etc, etc) and then they were going to open it up for others to join. However, I just saw on one of the orgs' sites that they had a conference recently (w/in the last year or so). It was a picture from their 5th Annual Conference. But there were no more details. So I have no idea what's going on with it now. It seems like they are functioning but I have no clue if they are accepting other MC orgs. One of the founding orgs used to do updates about it on their website, but they don't do it anymore. I'd like to look into it more, but I'm kinda swamped w/ work from my sorority and all.

local,

This isn't the one that I heard about. The one I know of is called the National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGC). They've been together for at least 5-6 years now.

Hello all,

I'm a newbie here and may I first thank the moderators for starting this forum about Up & Coming National GLOs. I've read the comments made about the National Multicultural Greek Council and the NCGLO and was wondering if anyone has any updated information. I am a member of Sigma Omega Epsilon and this information would be most helpful to me and my organizations (we have a brother fraternity).

Thanks and I look forward to being part of this forum.
