Mademoiselle bites the dust
Conde Nast recently announced that Mademoiselle magazine is folding after being around since 1935. Besides the problems with the format being revamped several times, they've also cited the events of September 11 (and their economic fallout) as part of the reason.

Even though I haven't read Mademoiselle for years (because after I turned 30 or so, I felt like the magazine was kicking me out), I am still somewhat bummed to see it go. It was the first "grown-up" magazine I ever bought.

I haven't read Mademoiselle for years, either, and I'm way past 30.
Mode magazine, which is targeted toward women who are a size 12 or larger, as I am, is also going out of business -- the last edition is this month's (October).
That's a shame. Unfortunately, many people just don't realize that 60 percent of American women are a size 12 or larger, including women who have purchasing power.
Mode's ceasing publication will mean fewer advertising and editorial article/photograph outlets for stores and clothing makers wishing to reach larger women.
I honestly doubt Vogue (which I do read) would pick up on that.

I'm, um, ok I'm 34 and I still love Mademoiselle so I am pretty bummed about this! (Sheila, I am hereby renaming you the official GC bearer of bad publication news )
I think I'll be okay though, just so they don't take my Cosmo away from me!

Mademoiselle? What's next, Glamour?
It used to be a rite of passage--when you graduated from high school, you knew you were then old enough to quit reading Seventeen, Ingenue, and Young Miss and start reading the 2 "big girl" magazines. Boooo!

Hey wait a minute!!! "Larger Women" are women size 12+ ??? Since when??? You're not "fat" just because your size is in double digits!!! It all depends on your height and build.

Aephi alum,
The so-called "fashion industry" considers women size 12+ larger women. That's a subject, however, for a whole another thread.

Magazine news
For fans of the Chic Simple living guides by Kim Johnson Gross and Jeff Stone, the New York Times reports that Hearst Magazines (publishers of O: The Oprah Magazine, Harper's Bazaar and Town & Country, among others) plans to launch a Chic Simple magazine in October.

As far as I'm concerned Glamour hasn't been around for years, ever since they got that new editor-in-chief who used to run Cosmo. Glamour used to be SOOOO great, it had all the beauty stuff but also a lot of information on women's health and social issues. I read it religiously until they forced their editor to retire, and now...well...I might as well just read Cosmo (which I do adore).
Anyone else here still mourning the loss of Sassy? I know, I can be so lame sometimes.

I adored the first issue of Mademoiselle I bought! That was almost four years ago, and after they switched over to that "Me Years" thing, I quit looking at it. The new format seemed like I was reading "YM" or something all over again, except for tasteless (in my opinion) articles like, "6 Guys to Do Before You Say 'I Do'". Euh...

Wow that sucks!!! I can't believe that Mademoiselle is leaving us, kinda sad, the one magazine I always looked for in the Super Market, not that I don't like Glamour, I always liked Mademoiselle a lot better. I wonder if any other magazines such as Mademoiselle is having any other financial problems.

I remember reading that article! I agree that it was tasteless. Don't get me wrong...I love Cosmo and Glamour. But, I sometimes feel that their articles portray young women as people will sleep with just about any guy they meet. Then, they contradict themselves in the health sections by saying "don't sleep with too many guys cause you can get an STD". I read the magazine for the articles on health issues, beauty, and the triumph stories (for instance...I survived breast cancer or the recent one about the cop who caught a rapist by using his saliva found on a straw). The articles about the different guys you should do before you get married...I can definitely do without those.

Guys the last issue of Mademoiselle came out in Nov. 2001 (moment of silence). However......
Glamour Magazine has incorporated Mademoiselle. And I think Glamour is better than ever. The recent issues have had women of all different shapes and sizes looking good. Plus, its had good articles about supermodels who use to be thin and now are more happier than ever doing Plus size modeling. I think the Jake section is histerical and its got a lot of good tips on being independent and how to succeed.
Ill just say one thing... if I see a YM and it looks like a good issue.. i dont care if my HS friends do call me immature..... at 22, im buying it!

oh my goodness! This has to be some sort of sick joke. I love Mademoiselle!!!!! I have been a subscriber for years so this really bites. I'm not happy about that at all....why is it that they always have to get rid of a good thing. Does anyone know the real reason they're doing it??? Makes ZERO sense to me.
p.s. and YES, I miss Sassy too...I'm not ashamed to admit it! LOL

KappaStargirl - have you checked out Glamour lately? They got rid of the yucky ex-Cosmo editor and it is actually readable now. I've bought a couple issues in the past 6 months and it reminds me of how it used to be when I first was buying it in the 80's.
tridelta4ever - I think the real reason Mlle went belly up is they want to push Lucky (also published by Conde Nast). And even though I like Lucky, let's face it, how hard can it be to make that magazine? Buy stuff...take pictures of it...arrange it on a page. Voila! Heck of a lot easier than paying people to write articles about which vibrator is the best on the market.
