The Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter at Vermont has been closed by the university. The action was due to a chapter survey that included the question, "Who would you rape?"

While I agree that the chapter should be in big trouble, I don't like how heavily it is being politicized.

I am going to hope that it was someone with a lousy sense of humor. But how many times do you have to tell them you can't put this kind of stuff in print? Hanging around chatting about this would be offensive but having it reported to the school would still only be hearsay.

An introduction to the petition stated: “This egregious expression of rape culture is only the most recent example of systemic sexism at UVM. The past year alone has witnessed rape, multiple sexual assaults, and anti-abortion chalking in public spaces.
“While the university administration has laid off long-time Women’s and Gender Studies faculty and supported sexist institutions like Sigma Phi Epsilon, it has refused to take concerted action to combat sexism and rape culture,” the petition continued. “We demand that instead of diverting resources into vast salaries for its administrators, UVM should launch an aggressive campaign against sexism and rape culture, and it should expand institutions such as Women’s and Gender Studies and the Women’s Center at UVM.

Really? Especially at the bolded. The school launched a police investigation about the survey. How is that possibly supporting a sexist organization.

Exactly - at the bold.

This is so much different than the hypothetical "Who would you most like to have sex with?" I have a feeling that these thoughtless young men were trying to say that in a tough way and so used "rape" to frame the question. At least, I hope they were just thoughtless and dumb and not actually a brotherhood of rapists.

It's officially closed, yup.

It's extremely painful being a member of SigEp right now. The media has aboslutely torn us apart and the rape jokes are unbearable.

I know damn well that we did not raise a chapter of rapists. The question was ignorant and insensitive, but it was the action of one.

We had our Candlelight ceremony last night as a chapter, and it brought almost every one of us to tears. The fucking nerve people have to call my Fraternity a "sexist institution" is absolutely appalling. I just want to slap the shit out of anyone who even pokes at that...

Unfortunately it only take one idiot to ruin everybody's name. Only thing you can do is stop being defensive and do positive actions to raise our name above this. Thankfully our national is quick on the trigger and said loudly that this kind of action is not tolerated.
