Three articles on Kentucky Greek Life
The UK student newspaper The Kentucky Kernel has three articles on Greek Life at UK. All three are more or less fluff pieces, but positive in nature.
A year in the life of a Sorority President
September 16, 2011
By Sarah Geegan
Oh, sorority life. Is it all about date parties, Vineyard Vines bags, Monday meetings and Lily-patterned letters? Nope.
Those “date parties” require meticulous planning. Venue selection. Transportation. Theme.
Those Monday meetings announce a multitude of undertakings. Membership education. Financial upkeep. Recruitment. Panhellenic activities.
And those girls will wear those Lily letters and carry those Vineyard Vines bags to campus-wide philanthropy events that take a full year to plan.
Sororities at UK are well-oiled machines with officers, committees, advisers and long-standing traditions to uphold. This poses a question: Is it possible to oversee one of these groups and graduate, sanity intact?
Frats, Sororities set fashion trends of their own
September 16, 2011
By Cassidy Herrington
Fashion is a rigorous, ever-changing style cycle that is constantly reinventing itself, from Champs-Elysees in Paris to Fifth Avenue in New York.
Yet one fashion avenue stands alone it its trend-setting. Anna Wintour, take note.
At UK, fraternities and sororities are the creators and models of their own trends, often entirely independent of the threads on couture models.
Caroline Barnett, a biology senior and member of Pi Beta Phi, describes UK’s Greek style as “southern preppy.”
Greek philanthropy gives back

By Kate Carpenter
Greek organizations may be known for being social organizations, but that is just at first glance. If you take a deeper look, Greek organizations are also associated with giving back to the community.
Each sorority on UK’s campus contributes to a national charity. Whether in terms of money or physical service to an organization, each sorority gives back to the community in some way. Although associated with national philanthropies, sororities donate to local chapters.
