Alcohol does wonders for an individual's self-confidence. It's not surprising that young people enjoy using a confidence booster in social settings, plus the fact that peer pressure is difficult to resist.

Regardless, these children need to grow up and stop abusing their bodies.

Totally agree with pj. But the peer pressure is hard to resist for some. I've always been secure enough in myself, so peer pressure never was a problem for me.

Should be a different title to the thread, though. I'd say why do people like getting wasted period? I don't see the reason for it, it's dumb, to me. "Peer pressure, self confidence, confidence booster" or whatever. It's the same as taking a bucket of low self-esteem and mingle it in the "world's" expectations and you've got a quivering, hopeless mass of insecurity. That's what it is. I hated the drunks in college, and I don't like them as an adult, either.

I was going to say something similar (not just focusing on college students), but I also realize that a lot of underage/newly-21 people binge drink since "they don't know the next time they'll get a drink" (according to many of the articles I've read).

I hate when Salon does cutesy poo articles like this.

And, yes, drinking is fun, and it doesn't have to be all tied up with things like self esteem. It's fun to sit around with your best friend at home and drink too much wine and laugh at what idiots the Kardashians are.

This is sad...like they need it or something.

Well, it's not affecting me, so oh well, to each its own.

It's not so much that they NEED it -- it's more that they don't have (legal) ways of getting it on their own.

I like to have a drink, but I can go to happy hour and have 2 beers every day if I want to. A 20-year-old has to wait until the LABOR DAY PAJAMA BASH to have a drink, so s/he will drink as much as possible at that time.

I still don't get it, that's why I said to each its own.

This is what I disagree with, though.
