Help! Sophomore Rush at Arizona State
I will be a sophomore at ASU; as a ASU Freshman I had a 3.82 GPA, and worked part time. I did not go out for fall rush last year, but really want to now. My mother is a Delta Gamma alumna and has gotten some recs for me for DG. I am open to other frats and would be very happy with Delta Gamma, but what are my chances as a sophomore? I had lots of high school activities (cheerleader, art awards, church ministries, community service) if that matters now. Unfortunately, I do not really know any of the girls at ASU in a sorority now. Any advice?

Delta Gamma is one of the first women's fraternities.

Everything before Gamma Phi is technically a women's fraternity -- so I guess she's only interested in Pi Phi, Theta, Kappa, Alpha Phi & DG.

There are some GC regulars who are familiar with ASU and I think you'll likely hear from them. ASU recruitment is quite different than UofA recruitment and I am not qualified to give you any information other than to point you towards the stickies in the Recruitment Section of GC.
Congratulations on that first year GPA, by the way!

I don't think that is necessarily true. It is just a difference of what the national org calls themselves. Obviously ADPi is very old but I'm pretty certain they are not a fraternity. Zeta Tau Alpha is a little bit younger than KD yet we are a sorority and they are fraternity. No hard and fast rules for who is a sorority and who is a women's fraternity.

The ASU Greek System does not generally penalize women who go through as Sophomores. For some Chapters on campus they will take a reduced number of Sophomores because the majority of their Chapters will be made up of Sophomores that are now active members. Your GPA will certainly help and so will college activities. I would highly suggest getting recs for all the Chapters because there are some heavy releases after round one (which is very short) A recommendation for some Chapters might secure you an invite back to round 2 which will help you get to know the girls better and the Chapter will get to know you better. A recommendation also helps us to get to know you better prior to you walking through the door.

getting recomendations
Is it too forward to send my information to alumni from different houses I do not know and ask for recommendations? I really do not know how to show up with recs at all the houses, but I would like to have that option.

What do you mean by "do not know?" It's not unusual at all to solicit recommendations from women you don't know directly, but I'm picturing chain mail. If you have connections to women (friends of your mother, your English teacher's best friend) those are perfectly normal. You may have read threads that direct PNMs to their local alumnae panhellenic. The presumption is the PNM wouldn't know any of these women.

If you're in Phoenix, the Phoenix Alumnae Association has an active group and helps with recs. Here's their web site
