Excerpts from the article ^^ posted on the web site of the Detroit Free Press:
A University of Michigan fraternity has been suspended — and its future in doubt — after allegations that pledges were physically abused, forced to drink alcohol, insulted and humiliated.
The national headquarters of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, which has 258 chapters or colonies according to a national spokesman, has suspended the Ann Arbor chapter pending the outcome of an investigation.
“Everything ceases at the current time until we close the investigation,” spokesman Brandon Weghorst said of the SAE activities at U-M.
The suspension is part of the zero-tolerance policy , passed years ago and reaffirmed by national leaders in 2009, he said.
Weghorst said it was not clear how long an investigation might take. A statement from the national office notes that “the future of this chapter’s existence remains uncertain.”
Additionally, the U-M Interfraternity Council (IFC) suspended SAE’s involvement with IFC activities Wednesday, said U-M spokesman Rick Fitzgerald.
The investigation began Jan. 28 after [the] director of Greek Life at the university, received an anonymous complaint about alleged hazing at SAE. The e-mailer was identified as a parent of a pledge. . . .
Edited to add: Another news source has details on the specific allegations made in the parent's e-mail. (The news source apparently got a copy of the e-mail.) See:
