Do you have the "complete recordings of Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers?" It's a must-have if you're a Sam Cooke fan.
Here's a link to a live recording from 1955:

*runs to CD collection to add it in the rotation*

I don't think I have him with the Soul Stirrers. Adding that to my Christmas list. The greatest hits I have includes a gospel song. He was a great gospel singer.
ETA: The CD I have includes some Soul Stirrers' songs. There's the song from the link you provided and one gospel song with just Sam Cooke. The Soul Stirrers make me want to run around the house and jog down the block in the name of Jesus.
Thanks for the link. This is the stuff that Friday evenings are made of!

Didn't Sam Cooke's death involve his wife/girl or something? I'm not sure about all of the details, but I thought it was something to that effect.

^^^ There are several versions floating around the Internet. At the time it was quite shocking news. Who can say for sure, other than that he was not with his wife; he was shot three times; and the death was ruled "justifiable homicide" based on the facts presented.
I wasn't there. I only know that we lost an incredibly gifted man that night. Listen to the gospel recordings and tell me what you think.

Sam Cooke was a great singer. "Darling, you send me" and "A change is gonna come" are my favorites.

I remember reading that it was over another woman. Al Green's wife did him in too over the same thing.

Are you referring to what happened in 1974? That incident involved a girlfriend. Last I checked, the Rev. Al Green is very much with us, and glad of it am I! (it's Sunday morning and we have four hours of gospel music on KXCI. You can live stream it, kxci.org. It's one of a handful of community radio stations, not PBS, but true community supported, in the United States. Amazing programming.)

Speaking of the gospel according to Rev Al Green, this is one of my favorite gospel songs:

Back to listening to the Soul Stirrers via youtube. This is such an old group (1926 - present) but many people only know them since they brought in Sam Cooke. Sam Cooke handpicked Johnnie Taylor (who is defined as "an effective mimic of Cooke") before Cooke left the group to pursue secular music.
