--This past Sunday the InterFraternity Council voted to reinstate Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity to a probationary period as a step towards the return of the expelled fraternity to acceptance by the University. The process began earlier in the year when the fraternity was allowed to join the University as a student organization for participation in the Winter Carnival Statues competition.
At the time, TKE elected not to be judged competitively in the Student Organization category, choosing to be judged but not ranked in the Fraternity category.
To facilitate the reinstatement of TKE as an officially recognized fraternity, the group was viewed with the statues of new organization, requiring TKE to follow the full process used by IFC when admitting new Greek organizations. As part of its campaign for reinstatement, TKE had to submit a report to IFC detailing their activities, including community service, campus participation and charity.
The probationary period will last for a year during which TKE will be observed for compliance with the terms of probation. After the year of probation is up, IFC will vote again, this time on whether to accept TKE as a fully fledged fraternity, which would include representation on the Greek governing body.
TKE had been expelled by the University several years ago after incidents of underage drinking at the TKE house on College Ave.
TKE remained active after its expulsion from the University, aiding with several Winter Carnival statues that include recent first place winners in the month long category for fraternities.
