Setting a good example

I don't know about any of you, but I truly believe that Executive Council/Board and other Chapter Officers should be setting a good example for the rest of the chapter. What do you do when you have to get on their case over and again about their behavior at events? It's gotten to the point where I've had to go to an advisor and I really didn't want to do that. Any suggestions on getting your officers to set the example for the chapter would be appriciated.

I think you handled that correctly. Try to handle it yourself and if that doesn't work, go to the advisers...that's what they are there for! I'm an adviser for a chapter and a newly elected officer had to have her stomach pumped due to alcohol posioning. Well, she was removed from office (after being asked to resign and not doing so), asked to apologize to the chapter, and then has to also sponsor a campus/greek alcohol awareness event.

Use your standards/judicial board to impose sanctions if necessary. And honestly, if it's out of hand, then remove them with a vote by standards/judicial board. That sort of conduct just isn't what officers of your organization need to be doing.

Let me know if you need help!

I can relate. The chapter I pledged at had a "problem" with our president. She had a tendency to get a little tipsy a lot... Well, she even got drunk, went back to a fraternity house, fell asleep in his bed and well, went to the bathroom. Needless to say, her actions had ramifications on our house (and our social interactions) that took A LONG TIME to get over.

JUD board helped, if it wasn't for them, god only knows what would have happened.

I think that officers should set the tone and be pillars of the sorority, not termites eating at it.

This doesn't work in smaller organizations.

When you get members setting "bad examples" such as what my President recently did during the Rams/Patriots SuperBowl party we hosted, you can't oust them because of their incredible charisma and popularity.

My President was being VERY violent and very careless with alcohol during the large gathering, all because of his "passion for the Patriots." He brought a lot of glass bottles and broke quite a few, hitting a few party-goers in the head, in the back, spilling beer on girls, being very out of control. The result is that because of the widespread knowledge that he is the president, many people have stated they will not return to our social events for fear of their health.

The rest of the executive board and our advisor are all strong alcohol advocates -- how can we change this before it gets worse?

If they won't set an example, then make an example out of them. Impeach 'em!

Leadership by example isn't just a good way to be a leader, its the only way to be a leader.

Sounds like a MAJOR Risk Management and Leadership Problem. If the current group of advisors are advocating alcohol abuse, then document everything and pass it up the Chain of Command before tragedy or charter pulling starts.

Agreed.

These people don't belong in leadership positions and they need to be removed NOW to avoid causing further damage to your chapter. Maybe contacting your HQ or whoever is necessary to have these people removed is your best bet.
