Introduction

It is a few weeks until Recruitment but I figured now would be a nice time to post here I'll be participating in this year's recruitment at my school and even though it isn't quite here yet I am so excited to take part in this process!

I am the first in my family to go greek though and only found 2 recommendations from my community even though I searched most of the spring and all summer so I am hoping that isn't too big of a setback!

How is everybody doing today?

Thank you!

I've done most of my homework (I think), plus private help from a very particularly helpful and lovely GC member (♥) so I'm not feeling too intimidated, but really excited, and a little nervous. I've basically heard that at some schools, recs are a must at all houses (--I don't know if my school is one of them--) but I don't think I can find any more at this time as I've really asked everywhere I know... So I think I am just going to try to not stress about it!

Like I said in the other forum, I don't want to say where exactly I'm going, but I am going in the southwest. I really love it in this part of the country and I don't think I will feel too uncomfortable even if it will probably be hot hot hot, so that has to be a plus I've been looking up tips on how to deal with the weather while outside houses

I actually have a question for anybody... I've read a lot about posting rush stories and I am not sure what I should do. I was originally planning on posting mine live, but I am now re-thinking that decision because I've heard that it could jeopardize my rush even if I am as tactful as possible. I know it is ultimately my choice but I wondered what people thought? It seems like some people do enjoy the live ones, not that I know if I will have a good one or not. And then I wasn't sure if I should use some sort of 'code' or not because a lot of people like the Curlygirly rush thread and that one didn't have a code, and I am not sure if using a 'code' is too boring or cliché or something. But I think it can be helpful, for some reasons? But apparently if I provide 'enough' clues, people will be able to figure out where I am anyway So basically I am not sure what to do... Not that it is that huge of a deal but I just don't want to inadvertently mess up my own experience with ignorance! But thank you everybody so far who has been helpful, providing advice on all the other forums! I have found a wealth of knowledge here and am so glad I found this site before I went through rush

You really do just have to do what you feel comfortable with.

If you're nervous about live recruitment, then hold off until afterward.

Some people have done a "sort of live recruitment" where they just delay each day's post by a day or 2. Ex: You go to your first day of events on Sunday, but don't post them until Monday or Tues, so you're not exactly posting Sunday's recap on Sunday night.

If you want to do it live, you might want to add an extra chapter or two so no one can figure out which school you go to. Don't tell anyone until the end which chapter(s) weren't real.

Bad idea.

If folks start making things up, then what's real?

Then it goes from one or 2 fake chapters, to whole fake recruitments. lol.

I don't know making things difficult for the sleuths is fine by me if it allows PNMs to be more honest about the things they actually experienced. If she doesn't go overboard talking about her "red herrings" and just has them there to throw off the numbers, no one will be the wiser until she does her reveal. The whole problem with the real time stories is that everyone figures out where the PNM goes to school based on the number of chapters. They already change the names, why not the number?

I think a 'delayed recap' would probably be better then. And I think since I am so worried about somehow being stalked or even messing it up for myself, I may just change all the names to a 'code.' Does posting the houses out of the order I visit them help significantly?

I think if I added one or two fake chapters it could be better but I am just not sure I feel comfortable with it? It feels dishonest to me and even though I'd be lying to a bunch of women I have never met, I'd still feel like I was lying. I think it is a nice thought, though, but hopefully my measures will help at least to some extent? Maybe I am being naïve though and I should take even more measures to protect myself. I read 'Barbie's Guide To Writing an Honest Real-Time Sorority Recruitment Story' and there were a lot of tips in there, like not revealing campus (I wasn't going to do that til the end anyway), and even your class standing. Can saying 'I'm a senior rushing for a third time' help identify you? (I am not actually a senior rushing for a third time.)

The other thing is, in a general consensus, a story is more meaningful if it is more honest, right? As long as I am tactful, I would like to be as candid as I can. Do you think this would be a mistake?

Thank you both for all your help I really appreciate getting my questions answered!

If you're delaying the post then you don't need to add chapters to hide your school.

And yes saying your class status and major can identify you unless everyone at your school who is rushing is a senior engineering major for example. Unless you're an incoming freshman giving your status and major is pretty obvious, and it only takes a few more pieces of information for people to track you back from there.

As for honesty, go for it. You seem to have thought the whole thing through pretty well so you're probably in a good place. In the end though, remember your recruitment's about you and not about how to write a story for us

If she wants to be honest and get her feelings out while it's happening, she can write it in a paper journal and post it on GC later. I'd rather have that than a real time story at what is basically a fake campus (i.e. a schedule/number of chapters/number of cuts that don't exist).

Using aliases is a LOT different than adding or subtracting chapters.

And yes Cherry, saying you are a senior rushing for the third time can pretty much put a big giant arrow on your head.

OK, you have all given me really great advice. Thank you so much! I think I will delay posting it just to be on the safe side, if not by a full week than by a few days at least. Drolefille, I really like that advice and will keep it in mind. I will just focus more on it for myself than for other people. My main concern was that if a sudden problem came up in the middle of the week then I would have a number of respectable women to give me opinions/answers on, but I can see that this has happened even though I am not in the middle of my recruitment. Anyway-- I am so excited for it to start! I better enjoy the rest of summer though, because school will be here soon... Thank you all for your responses!

Hey, everybody. I have another question. I think it is kind of stupid to be honest, but I was just wondering about it.

I read a few threads that explained in fair depth just how bid matching works. You place your #1 and #2 (for instance) and if you are on #1's A list, you get matched; if not, but you are on #2's A list, then you get matched to 2. (Right?)

Anyway, my question is, is it possible that BOTH 1 and 2 put you on their A list? (In which case you'd go to 1, right?)
I'm not expecting this to happen to me or anything, but just trying to understand the system a little bit better. Thanks so much!

I'm not the best when it comes to bid matching questions though, so I could be wrong.

It depends on WHERE you are on those lists. If #1 reaches quota before you are reached on the list, then the program would attempt to match you with 2.

But if you are reached on #1's list before they get to quota, you would be matched to 1.

Don't give yourself a headache worrying about this kind of thing, though.

UT yes pleaseee:)

Hey everyone,
I'm Jasmine and well I'm not exactly a college student yet, though I will be the fall of 2011, I decided it would be a good idea to get a head start on learning about all of the sororities out there, particularly the ones at UT in Austin considering I know how competitive they are

Well thanks for reading and good luck to everyone here!

My suggestions:

Enjoy senior year. You only get one of those.

Start to think of who you know that you could ask for recs.

Keep your grades up.

Do a search for Texas because there are many threads here about UT.
