Fall 2011 Sorority Recruitment at SEC school advice!!!
Hey girls!
I am going to go through sorority recruitment this Fall at UKentucky. However, being a first generation "greek" and being an out-of-state student I am in need of some MAJOR advice and pointers! I have heard that recruitment here at UK is rather competitve and cut-throat. Althtough recruitment is months away I still wanted to be SUPER prepared for it. I have asked my teachers and other adults about sororities or greek life in general, however they all went to a small local college so greek life did not exist or they were not involved at all. The majority of the information I do know about greek life is through UK's greek life website.
Ladies, please help mee!
Much thanks and love! <3

UK is probably the least competitive of all the SEC schools. I personally know many girls who go through recruitment there without letters of rec and are the first greek in their families. I think there are 13 chapters and Phi Mu will be colonizing sometime next year. Make sure you have a good GPA, high school activities, community service, and a positive outlook and I'm sure you'll do just fine. Read all of the advice for recruitment at SEC schools and for recruitment in general, it will be be helpful. If you can secure a letter or two, fine. But if not, you will be fine, too. Several young ladies from my small hometown went through UK's recruitment with no letters and no experience at all and both received bids to great chapters. Good Luck.

*Thought it was my turn since prettyv picked it up last time. prettyv, next time you're responsible for posting the link!
Next, the search function on GC is your friend. Start in the recruitment forum. You'll find so much valuable information there, it'll keep you busy for hours.
Do as much reading as possible and write down questions you have that aren't answered somewhere in the plethora of information that's on GC. Then come back and post. And good luck to you!

As mentioned above, use the recruitment threads and the search function to find UK specific information. Do not be fooled into thinking UK rush is easier than others in the SEC. It is not. My daughter went through the process in the fall and had a good outcome. Like you, she rushed as an out of state girl and did fine. You need recs, you need to get them in ASAP, you need a 3.0 and you need to have a shiny open mind. Every house on that campus is tremendous and you will be wise to not listen to idle chit chat about tiers.
P.S. Know what is top tier at UK? The basketball team. C-A-T-S Cats! Cats! Cats!

I would never recommend going thru rush at UK without recs. Try to have a least 1, so you don't have to worry about that component of the process. Better safe than sorry. I know many young ladies at UK that are in sororities, and they are all having a great experience.
Right now all anyone can focus on is the final four. C-A-T-S Cats Cats Cats!!!

I would echo the recommendation of others about not going through UK recruitment without at least one recommendation to each chapter.
I would expect heavy cuts if your GPA is below a 3.0 and if you have no extra-curriculars regardless of what any panhellenic/greek life materials say.

Another extremely important thing about rushing an SEC school is you need to go out and meet people. Smile at everyone you pass and say "Hello." If they don't know you, they are more likely to cut you.

I'm rushing as a sophomore at UK this fall. I have many recommendation letters sent in and I have a pretty good GPA, well above all the sororities minimum GPA requirement. Any other advice you can give?
